long story short,i needed to replace my starter on my m1008.put the new one in and worked good for a couple of starts,next time i went to start it the starter solenoid burned out and a fusable link on the distribution block burned out.got a new relay and fusable link and went to put everything in hooked up battery and starter turns over with no key in the ignition.both leads at the starter now have constant power unless i cut the lead with the fusable link on it.anbody have any ideas for a diesel and 24v newb?
 
You may have an issue with the ignition switch. Take a test light and see if you are getting power to the wire that triggers the solenoid with the key off.
 
I am not remembering exactly what was different on the CUCV starters. But, on the 12V versions, the wire I am talking about would be the smaller wire on the starter solenoid. It should only have power when the key is turned.
 
yes that one does have constant power to it now,not sure about before it burned up a fusable link though
 
everything else works with the ignition on.would it be a bad thing to just put a push button switch on for the starter?
 
If the ignition switch failed in the start position, that would cause the symptoms you are describing. I think there may be a second relay under the dash on the CUCV's that had something to do with the starter system. I think it was to use a 12V signal to turn on a 24V signal to the starter solenoid.
 
The next step would be to start tracing the wiring between that relay and the starter and see where the power is coming from.
 
it actually was the relay.it was dark out last night so I couldn't tell for sure.i did the doghead thing and it works great.thanks for the input
