When I start the solenoid stays engaged if I don't "pull" back on the key tumbler.
Is that like a bad / worn tumbler or does my starter need shims?

if key turn back fixes the problem its in the switch on the colume.

prob worn out from 1974ish. easy to replace. and lube the link rod slide area also.

and if you have to shim a sbc / bbc starter you got other problems. i have never had to shim one.

it'll be your lock cylinder... quick way to check will be to disconnect the battery... turn the key to the start position, let go, and see if it returns/springs back to the run position...

I kind of thought it would be...my keys are so worn that they don't even have edges...they are smooth...that tells me that the keys and cylinder are probably the original...

guy i know just sold a mint 81-91 dash pad $505 + s&h @ $60 bucks.

and might as well pop the wheel off and remove lockplate and pull 1 screw and replace the lock unit. cheep and easy to do.

$610 on that grill now... :eek1:

Holy K5, Batman...that's a beautiful grill but that's just out of control...

Now I feel real, real good about getting my NOS grill for $212.00
