So after I reinstalled my 4L80E my starter hasn't meshed up with my flywheel properly. There were 3 shims when I took it out and 3 shims when I reinstalled it but it sounds like crappola. I picked up a few extra shims and had 4 in there and also tried none, 1, and 2. What gives?

Is this the original trans type or did you just make the swap? Has anything been replaced other than the trans? Is this a stock type starter or aftermarket?

You don know the shims can go in 2 different ways, right? You can shim the starter to where the gear is closer to the flywheel or further from the flywheel.

If it is making a high pitched sound when starting the mesh is to tight and the starter needs to be shimmed away from the flywheel. If it is loud and clanky it needs to be shimmed closer.

would this be done by flipping the shim over and only applying to one bolt? It has been raining constantly for a week here. As soon as it clears off, I will have to try that.

No, taking shims out puts the gears closer together. Putting shims in pushes them farther apart. You should not need to use a shim in only one hole. If you do, you could crack the starter housing.

The shims I have used in the past would flip back and forth. Either angle towards the block or away from the block. Like JEBSR said don't use just one whole.
