Last night was the third time in 1 month that my starter stuck on while starting the k5. I crank it once then it sicks on. I have to remove the battery cable for it to stop cranking.

I am concerned that it will burn up if it continues to happen. What can I do to troubleshoot this one?

Thanks

Probably a bad starter solenoid relay. It's usually cheaper to replace the starter than just replace the relay. You might also check the ignition switch to make sure it's not sticking, but I bet it's the relay/solenoid.

it's the bendix in the starter... you can try removing it and lubing the bendix to free it up, but it will usually return in short order... some guys try to prevent this by prelubing the bendix on a new starter with never-seize....

but honestly, I probably install 100 chevy starters a year, in HORRIBLE marine environments, and don't bother.. more the key to me is the quality of the replacement starter...

So summit has starters from 100 - 400 bucks. What features/specs constitute a good starter for this truck? Ide like to install something that will live a long life.

Also,
Any estimates on how much time I might have left with the current one until it quits?

I know Tilton and Powermaster make very nice stuff... and I've used the GM performance stuff at work with good luck... can't vouche for any of the other brands.... Summit could be hit or miss on the quality...

could be a couple starts, could be dozen's, it will progressively get worse...

I actually had a similar issue on mine that was finally fixed with a replacement ignition switch... my original was really sloppy and worn.

It's an easy swap with the original key and a paperclip trick.

Any old parts store should have starters on the shelf for under $100. Probably even with a lifetime warrenty.

Laugh all you want....

Duralast starter Autozone, like $80 lifetime warranty, if it breaks.. I can have it out in ten min and get another. Never had any issues with one. :flipoff7:

I'm with deuling. the parts that can be changed quickly, I just as soon get the cheaper one with lifetime warranty.

X3 the starters in these trucks change out quite easily (After the 1st time) Any local parts store will have one. JUST DO IT:laugh:

I'll bet your wallet fits in your pocket better since you bought this truck:haha:
don't worry you get used to it

What's up with your trans? Still need one?

hey guys,
I recently found that my tran bell housing bolts were a bit loose which was causing a knocking sound which I assume was the bell housing slapping the body when the TC turned.

Could these loose bolts have caused my starter issues? I was thinking that if the starter was at a slight angle due to the loose bolts, maybe>?

What do you think?

certainly possible, depending on just how loose it was. tighten it up and see what happens.

Replaced the starter with a $100 lifetime warranty starter. No issues since ;)

It is running great except for the stupid thing when it won't go in gear after sitting warm. It takes like 30 seconds to engage in drive or reverse. It shifts great though.

I had a th350 that was slow to go into gear, but would eventually clunk into gear and take off with no issues. I talked to a guy at the tranny shop and he said it was hardened seals/o-rings that were most likely the problem. Said fluid flows past them at high pressure and will eventually swell the seal and it will engage into gear.

Not sure if that is true or not, but I dumped some tranny slip something or other that napa had on the shelf, didnt cure it, but It did cut down on the time it took to go into gear. I eventually got a different transmission.
