My truck for a bit has acted like it was missing teeth on the fly wheel. Sort of like it turns over part of a round and hit a spot with no teeth so the start free spins. some times a lot more than others. So i pull off the fly wheel cover and the starter. the teeth on both look good.

Is it the starter itself or the bendix or am i missing something else? would just going to get another starter fix it? Can you still just go get a bendix for a starter?

Sounds like the bendix on the starter is bad. Probably cheaper to just get a new starter, than repalce the bendix?

Would a loose connection seem like the same thing going to to the s connector on the bendix. Or would that make it where it just would not try at all?

i am off on unemployeement this week and this is just my play toy so i was just looking to get out of this cheap as possible. The truck does still start and run. i was thinking of taking the bendix off and cleaning then put back on. It does have a protective layer of oil and dirt on it.

I ask because I had that problem on an old camaro. Someone had put too many shims in. Removing one or two fix it. Teeth lined up correctly after removing them.

Sorry, no help here. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

I had an ol 69 truck with a 307 that did that intermittantly. Everyone always told me the bendix 'spring' was bad. When I would start it with a screwdriver across the contacts it'd fire everytime. Anyways, when I took that starter off and took some of it apart the only spring I saw in there was not broken. Replaced the starter/selinoid and all was fine. I still don't know what exactly a bendix is. :doah:

I cleaned it all up looked it over and put it back together hoping the loose wire i found was it. It was not. I replaced the seloniod, spring and rest of hardware with one from carquest for 9.99. Advance said they had one but did not. autozone had two but were shorter and looked like the hole the plunger goes in was smaller by just a little. Anyway i got it on and it starts right up. But it had been ran today so it starts easier. Tomorrow or the next when it is colder i will really see.

seems to me just the coil that creates the magnet must be breaking down and getting weak. Have saw it a bit on vickers valves on old machines but on these only have saw them go out near all together.

Thanks.
