starting my new build impact gun?

The Snap On impacts were no better than a Dewalt ten years ago.

bullsh*t.... my Makita is the same as a Dewalt or better, and it doesn't compare to the first snappy 18v, let alone the newer one...

Putting up pivots, we used the hell out of them, and the Snap On couldn't tighten a bolt anymore than a Dewalt.

all the non-snappy brand gun's are big, clunky and not nearly as tough... ESPECIALLY the Dewalt..

That may be. But ten years ago when we were putting up pivots at John Deere, the brand new Snap On and the brand new Dewalt were neck and neck for power level.

Power isn't everything.... the size is also a big diff.. this Makita wont fit into nearly as many spots as the Snasppy does.... all jobs aren't spinning lugnuts off, etc with lot's of room...

I have the original 18v Snappy thats about 15 yr's old, and it works as good as the day i bought it.. and it's been dunked in more bilge water than i care to remember.... i seriously doubt any of the others would survive that life.. we'll see how the Makita does...

here's a size comparison between the 2.... pretty sure the Dewalt is the same size as the Makita...

I figured I'd get a bunch of anti-snappy posts, but I'm pretty sure they have been the best guns on the market since the 18v impacts started coming out.. and well, they should for the price.. and I just wanted to point that out...

I'm gonna try to get a test on that IR gun... tho it looks pretty bulbous, the #'s are pretty intrigueing..

for 95.2% of the world, one of the other brands is fine.. but sometimes that extra edge helps....

you of all people should know that with your Snappy socket drawer... will a Horrible Freight impact socket get the job done? sure 80% of the time, but there are times when the thinwall strength and precision of a Snappy is gonna be the only solution.... at least in my line of work it happens... I would think a dealer mechanic would run into the same issues often..

all that said, Snappy is a poor choice in cordless, what with like 4 tools... :haha:

There is a detent pin or the other option is a friction ring. My Milwaukee has the friction ring. I'm not really sure which is better. The detent pin would be more like a traditional ratchet.

The "detent pin" is the spring-loaded ball that half the time you have to push back in with a small screwdriver to get the socket off, especially if you have cheap-azz sockets?

I can't say how they will hold up over time, but the new IR cordless impacts flat out destroy Snap-On's when it comes to power.

I doubt it...

I never said power was everything, I was just agreeing with BigJBear when you called bull **** on him. The Snap On impact has no more power than a Dewalt impact.

Working on boats, I am sure you can't just drag an air hose around behind you, but when I need power and compact, I use air tools. I have never had an instance with my Dewalt impact where it's bulky size bothered me, because I only really use it where I don't have air. Center pivots being the main use, and service calls on the side of the road. I have used the Snap On impacts, and they are nice, but they have such a a limited amount of compatible tools, they don't make sense for me. I have the following Dewalt 18 volt tools: 1/2 hammer drill, sawzall, angle grinder, flash light, radio, screw gun (greatest cordless tool ever), 1/2 impact, and circular caw. The only thing Dewalt doesn't make that I wish they would is an 18 volt grease gun.

equal power, smaller size and more durable = better.... whether better is worth double the price is up to the end user...

I went Makita mainly due to the straight die grinder, and a similar wide variety... but I'm doubting either the Makita, and especially the Dewalt (the quality isn't what it was when they first came out), have the build quality Snappy demands..

The main problem with the quality of Dewalt is they make different levels of tools, and it is hard to tell which one is which. The XRP are better quality.

My Hiltis have never let me down, survived everything from ladder falls to off a roof once. Only thing they didn't survive was theft....:angry1:

love my old 18 volt dewalt Impact and drill....

love my brand new 20 volt Impact driver and hammer-drill even more...

they have plenty of power to do most everything around the shop....but when things get tough... I break out the snappy air tools and then if they can't cut it....

I break out this bad boy.....
