good day guys,

my K5 stopped working after a long drive a few days ago, the started wasn't engaging at all..

i started checking the electric lines going to the starter and everything was looking ok

i checked all lines and fuses and everything was looking ok
everything in it worked except the starter

i then started shifting the gears down to 1 then back to Park

tried starting but nothing

then i just switched to N

and it worked!!!

turned it off and then back to Park and its working normal now

what caused such an issue??

My guess would be the neutral safety switch is starting to go out. It's on the column and is actuated by the trans shifter. I don't know if there is an adjustment on them or not. IIRC, there isn't.

yeah has to be the switch going bad. my buddy has a floor shifter in his and was to cheap to switch columns so the column would rotate when wheelin and everyso often when he went to start it, it wouldn't do anything so after rotating the column if would fire up so i bet its the nuetral safety switch

It's at the base of the column near the firewall. Kinda of a half-moon shaped piece of plastic with 2 (I believe) wiring connectors going into it.

i didnt replace it yet as i hardly use the truck now adays,

but the new problem that raised now is the opposite of the old one...some times when i start the engine the stays engaged and doesnt go off, so i have to quickly open the hood and take the (-) wire off the battery.

would that ensure a faulty Neutral safety switch?

I wouldn't think so...that sounds like your ignition switch....Neutral safety only prevents from starting anywhere other than park or neutral.
