Well, welcome to my day. I had *exact* the same problem
on my 400 small block K5. I lowered the starter, added a
shim across both bolts and reinstalled it. This solved the
problem. I'm not saying it was the shim. In fact, I kinda
think it was just taking it out and putting it back in. I believe
if you can actually install it a bit crooked if you aren't careful.
Two other thoughts:

- Do you still have the bracket that goes on the rear of the
starter attached? This helps stablize the starter.

- Make sure the bolts are torqued down to spec. Also, make
sure you have the standard GM starter bolts, which are special.

Hope that helps.

LOL thats funny because I have a 74 and when I first bought it it only had one, yes one bolt holding the starter in and when I took it out and EZ outed the snapped bolt and installed the new bolt it sounded the same , 2 yrs. i finally shimmed it , it was easy and it only sounds marginally better and my flex plate is in good condition too, ya know what it is, good ole' GM starters...

<font color=blue> I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy!

I have considered getting an aftermarket torque starter. I don't think this
will solve any starting problems over the standard Delco GM unit, but they
are generally lighter and smaller (so farther away from the headers).

Since I'm gather data, any recommendations in this area? I've heard the
Mean Green ones are recommended. Rumor has it they are found on
the stock car circuit.
