I've got a 87 k5 350 700r4, unkown 4in from previous owner. I'm on 33's now and don't really do anything to warrant bigger. I 'm thinking of just beefing the 10 bolts maybe tru-tracs etc. whaddya think?

at least get a 14bsf rear (3/4 ton)...I got one and now I have greater piece of mind....:waytogo:

What are your intended uses for the truck ?

I had a 90 Blazer with a Rancho 4" lift and 33's on 10 bolts. I broke 7 teeth off the pinion and 5 teeth off the ring gear just taking off from a stop light. Now to be fair, I had just bought it 5 months prior and I had no idea how the P.O. had treated it so my experience may be rare.

That said, I have a 4" lift with (one day) 35's going onto my 88 Sub with 10 bolts. How long they live is hard to say, but I'll just run them till they break and then upgrade. Good luck.

I've been running a 10 bolt front and a ford 9" rear for 7 years on 35's. Only thing I ever broke is a warn locking hub. That was going down a dirt road. Did bend the front end. But the truck was 8' off the ground and landed nose down.

Just kow when to back off. If you intend to do hard core, don't waist the money on the 10 bolts.

9" rears are tough...love that 3rd bearing...:waytogo:

Im running 33"s and 10bolt front and rear. I do light to moderate off roading, no rocks or mud, just trails and I tend to baby it at that. I drive 80% on the street with no issues.

I built my 10bolt with Yukon Chromoly axles, all new seals and bearings and then put a Loc-Rite locker in the rear. And havent had any issues and its been this way for 8 years.

Get rid of the rear 10b... They just can't hang.
14b is a waaaaay better option.
The rear end is where strength counts.

The front just needs beefy shafts, and yr pretty much good.
Just carry spare OE shafts, and spare U-joints.

You are not going to break the front so dont worry abou it.

The rear is iffy. a semi float 14b would be ideal for the strength witout sacrificing tons of clearance.

I would find a cheap SF 14bt rear with 4.10s and maybe find a 3/4tn front 10bt and switch the outers to gain a little umph back in it, with the 700r4 4.10s and 33's that would be perfect. I wouldnt put a posi in the front though, they are great but they do put alot more stress on the front axle, now i run a 10bt front with 5.13s, Yukon axles and a Alburn posi with 39.5in boggers and a 454, it has survived but i just use a little bit of common sense with the skinny pedal. But a rear posi, and 3.73s or 4.10s would be amazing amount of difference, as most of the pickups i have personally messed with always had 3.08s, and thats weak.

My k10 has 10 bolts all the way around. Rear detroit, front truetrac. Rear has superior axles. I did brake the rear ring once but it was trucking pulling 30k. When I was installing the new gears I found the shims weren't flat under the bearing and that the gears most likely pushed apart and broke the gear. I would look for a 14sf too.

Thanks, I'll be hitting junkyards I guess. I plan on light wheeling pulling a light trailer with quads and mostly street for her. Any suggestions on gear ratio?

4.10's or 4.56's would be my choice, since you have an OD auto and plan to tow a bit I would go with the deeper 4.56's.

I had 10 bolts front and rear in my blazer, ive had it feet off the ground, rocker deep in mud, and foot to the floor. It had a 6" lift and 33" tires, never ever had a problem

Dont unprade axles until its necessary, (thats my opinion) 10 bolts might not be favorite but until its really broke (ie: the ring and pinion) then its worth puting shafts in and or c-clip eminator kits

I dumped the 10b for the 14bff on my current build. With one of my past blazers I broke the ring gear on my 10b quite easily on 33's in light mud.

There is nothing wrong with being a bit over built with a 14bsf 6lug on your rig.

I'm on 10 bolts, 35's, 4.56's, Detroit rear, lockright front.

So far the count is 2 rear shafts, 3 front shafts.

For your entertainment...

Here is a video of 3 Ck5ers on the trail. I'm first in the 10 bolts, then Supermotard750 w/ 3/4 ton set up, and last is Chickenrammit on 1 tons.

3 different rigs and 3 different driving styles.

wow from reading all the replies i must have super awesome magical ten bolts

i been using the same set of 10 bolts for the past 10 years or so. were under a k5 with 38 inch tires then went u nder a suburban with 38s then back under another k5 all 3 of those trucks had a 400ci engine that was pretty strong, yeah you will wear out tie rods and ball joints about every other year or so but never really had any breakage. BUT i did mostly mud and trails, no bouncing up rocks

i did eventually go 1tons on the blazer and the 10 bolts are under a s10 with a welded rear and 33 inch boggers. this truck sees hill climbs, rocks and about eveyrthing else i can throw at it and its still holding up
