Steer me in the right direction

With a 44 up front, definitely just do crossover and run a HD tierod in the stock location. Otherwise, you really need to buy a pair of HD aftermarket knuckles and tierod clearance isn't that bad, especially if it's the early D44 with the rod on top of the knuckle arms. With anything over about a 35" tire in hard terrain, you'll want hydro assist. Buying a ported 2wd box to get started will get your toe in the door when you do crossover, then it's not as bad to add a pump kit and cylinder.

I am running the ORD crossover with high-steer and a REDHEAD gear box on my M1028 (D60) with 4" lift and 35's. No steering box mods but I do have the XJ shaft and bolt on ORD steering box brace. It drives better than any other square I have owned and no issues with steering off-road.

Thank you for the replies, sounds like high steer is not a necessity.. I just received my telescoping XJ shaft and ordered the adapter for 1” 48 spline column I’ll swap on to it once I pull the old one out and test fit everything so I know everything will fit before I dissemble a brand new shaft.. but yeah, I’m excited to see the difference in steering feel, also hoping this helps with further diagnosis.. total cost was $70, for me that was worth it compared to $15-30 for a used shaft that I have to go hunting for in a parts yard, I’m in the stage of life where time is harder to come by then money, although money isn’t necessarily easy to come by either..

Then I’ll start saving for redhead ported box and crossover..

Ok well i ran into an issue.. there is not any kind of retaining pins to melt or drill out and it’s about 1.5” short.. it is necked down on the end of the outter shaft, I was considering try to grind or cut that off but I’m not 100% sure there’s enough inner shaft to gain the 1.5”.. maybe I need to return this and buy one that has pins?

What are the guys with the 1” 48 spline column doing for the xj shafts? Im having trouble locating a 1” DD to 1” 48 spline u joint adaptor.. the adapter I bought was a 1” 48 spline to 3/4” DD but the upper end is a 1” DD

It was an used one I bought off CL after my tilt column disintegrated, presumably from being used as a grab bar to get in the truck.. so I’m not 100% sure, but it is the 1” 48 spline, I think maybe a 76ish..
I’ve read that thread a couple of times, and again now for good measure, no specific solutions for xj shafts with the older columns, other then replace it with a newer column, post #48 K85 octane mentioned to buy a u joint coupler from CPP, I searched their site and found nothing.. my issue is the top outter section of the shaft is 1”dd and all I can find is 3/4”dd to 1” 48 spline..
I should also mention I have a 2” body lift, my shaft length needs to be 22.5 (insert that’s what she said joke lol)

Well I found it, cost 3x as much as the shaft after tax and shipping.. but all in about $180, relatively cheap still. I’ll update when everything gets here to see if it’s all going to work..

Heat up that shaft with a small MAP torch and it will start to slide.

I heated it for a solid 2+ minutes, the grease it came pre-lubed with was boiling from the seam between the shafts and nothing, when I yanked on it, it felt like hard stop, as if the inner shaft was maybe flared out or something.. I read reviews from a different manufacturer with identical pictures and a guy said he had to beat it out with a hammer and then file/sand down the inner shaft.. I just bought another one with pins..

Second question tho, is it possible to remove and reuse the upper part of the factory shaft?
