Steering Box Adjustments?

You are supposed to put it up on stands so the front wheels can turn freely, then adjust the screw on the box so that there is a preload on the gears, this preload is measured at the steering wheel with an in-lb torque wrench on the steering wheel nut. Kind of like pinion bearing preload, i can't remember exactly but i think its supposed to be around 14 in lbs or something like that. I don't have my manuals with me, anybody else know what it is?

The factory manual tells you how to do it with the steering box out of the vehicle. I don't remember ever reading how to do it in the truck.

The adjuster that most often needs to be adjusted is the worm bearing adjuster. It is just behind the Rag Joint. Generally it is the ball bearings that wear in a recirculating ball steering box and not the gears. If you adjust the gear lash incorrectly your steering can lock up on you while in a turn. Some people try to adjust the gear lash because they don’t know the other exists (the gear lash is also much easier to get at than the worm bearing). The bearings are adjusted much like wheel bearings (almost snug) but you should be able to rotate it about 1/8th of a turn to get it right. I would try this first and then try to find the specks for the bear lash if this doesn’t work and all else is ruled out (steering linkage slop, frame cracking, etc…) If you need more help I’ll e-mail pic’s.
