I need to tap my steering box. I was installing the 2wd box and I think I might have messed up the threads. Are the bolts different? I was using the bolts off my 4wd box. Thanks guys!

Mounting bolts are all the same. It is easy to get them cross threaded if you're not careful. Have a friend help to hold the box while you start a couple bolts. I have seen many steering boxes with damaged threads.

Thanks Scott. I kept hitting new posts, I never saw it until now. I now going to tap and but new bolts if I can find them. Thanks again!!

After dealing with hanging the box on my own and messing up the threads on one of the ears I swore I would drilled them out and through bolts them with washers next time...

I have had several boxes with threads messed up I just drill and tap to the next bigger size, then use nuts (some of them have to be cut down) in addition.

I'm not sure if GM went to metric bolts on the 80 and up steering boxes--I think the older ones had 7/16x14 thread bolts...
