A buddy decided he would grab my '82 and run over to friends house, when I got home last night I saw a drip cloth under my steering box. Go out this morning to check it out and this is what I find.

:sign27:

Besides slapping him with the repair bill and taking his vehicle access away, any recommendations on a new box?

Is the Napa one decent or what?:dunno:

Odometer shows just 12 miles, so he definitely didn't go offroad. Might have just hit a dip to hard and fast or just old age, as the 'burb was rode hard and put away wet when I got it.

I have never seen a box do that!
I'm interested in hearing the story!

The last time we were out wheeling, jt512's box did the same thing, except it shot the whole front of the box out.... I think you should be ok with a stock replacement though. They're most likely all re-manned, and probably use all the same parts.

Maybe he hit a curb??
Look at the tire it should have some marks on the side wall if he hit it hard enough

looks like he's buying you a new box. from what ive heard, all the steering boxes are the same, all remanned with the same parts. just like brake calipers.

There's some low prices and good warranties on eBay for rebuilds around the $150 mark... plus $75 core in your case...

Me too--after working in a salvage yard awhile,I thought I'd seen a lot of strange failures, but never saw a GM steering box crack the case like that one!..

I've seen the "disc" on the front blow out of a few that were really rotted, the snap ring flew out,or the disc itself was full of holes..one guy that junked a '66 Impala that had the disc fail, had it towed in --said his wife parked the car right against a curb, tried cutting the wheels full lock, when it refused to turn, she gunned the engine and turned the steering wheel HARD,and it went POW!..:eek1:
She shut it off when the P/S fluid hit the exhaust manifold and smoke came belching out!..parts and ball bearings came out of the box,we could barely turn the wheels ..someone else ended up buying the car,we sold them another used box and it was a good deal for him..car was not bad at all,really..

I've seen some cars that slammed curbs, got whacked at the wheels by another vehicle, and the tie rods, center links, were bent like pretzels,or the ball joints busted clean off, even saw bent pitman arms and twisted pitman shafts at the splines, but no busted steering boxes, unless it was a direct hit!..

I got my 2wd rebuild at the Pomona Swap Meet. $100 works great. Could prolly get it from anywhere and much sooner than waiting for the next meet

There was no other damage on the truck to indicate hitting anything. So we grabbed a rebuilt box and slapped it on, all seems well just needs a bit more bleeding.
