I know I can buy a repair kit but I'm a cheap ass and my labor is free. Has anyone done there own frame repair brace using a piece of another framerail? Also would a K20 framerail in just the steering box location be close enough to a K5 for me to cut it up up and weld it to mine? Thanks guys.

There's not much to the ORD frame brace. Just a bar that goes from the inside of the frame rail to the front crossmember. Two of the steering box bolts bolt into it. Then there is another smaller plate on the front of the crossmember that sits behind a bracket and bolts to the crossmember and a bolt from the steering box goes through it also.

Cheap as the brace is, it wouldn't be worth the time to build it yourself but more power to you.

@centexk5 he's talking about the weld on patch plate kit that goes on the outside of the frame.

@Truckman4life I'm pretty sure that the area around the engine is basically the same for all square bodies. (the motor mount crossmember can vary based on engine)

2wd /4wd its the same for that area . cut out a chunk and use it . I have saved a few my self , also save the top / bottom lips for extra add on beef kind of like the kits give you .

Thanks guys that's what I was looking for. Yep I could probably do the brace myself @centexk5 but like you mentioned I'll just buy that part. For now I just want to fix the hairline cracks and weld on some beef before installing my new steering gear. I'll add the brace kit a little later since this will be fine for the winter.
