my steering box has developed a leak at the rag joint end -can anyone advise me on if i can just remove that part and put new seal on it,OR do i have to dissasemble the whole box. Thanks, 90 sub 1/2 ton 4wd.
I drained some of my fluid out and put in Lucas steering fluid with stop leak and it fixed it. If it is a small leak you can try that. Other wise you have to take the input shaft end apart and replace the seal. Not too difficult just got to have the correct tool to put the end torque back on the shaft correctly or it will blow the box up.
The resevore only holds about a pint if I remember correct. If you have lost enough you can just top it off. Mine was leaking up top and also off the bottom where the pitman arm sits. Basically you can take off the return hose with the hose clamp and drain what will come out. Put back in to normal spot on the dipstick and run it a minute and shut it off. Check the level and top off again and hope it stops the leak. Usually takes a few days to see results. Just chck the level every couple days. If it doesn't help plan on having to put in a new seal.
Just remember its kindof like a bandaid for it to fix. It expands the seal a little to Make it stop Leaking and can last a long time. I've had some last years and got Rid Of the car before it became a bigger issue. This will only fix the problem if it is a seepage or small slow drip. Anything more and the seal is Already toast.for the ten bucks for the stools ak its much easier to try than replacing the seal and it may be all you need.
