anyone here just replace the seal on the pitman arm shaft at the base of a steering box? am i looking for trouble or is it not too bad?

It's a double seal, there are two seals in there. Easiest way I found was to remove the pitman arm, remove the snap ring, then start the engine for just a second. Oh, be sure and put a big drain pan under the steering box, you will know why when you forget. Make sure all the seal parts came out. Be sure and put the two seals in correct order. They should be right as packaged. Be sure to seat the snap ring and don't use the old one, use a new snap ring.

I tried replacing the pitman shaft seals twice on 2 trucks I had, only once was it successfull at stopping the leak, and a friend who's tried doing that several times also said its usually a wasted effort since the bushing is usually hogged out that the pitman shaft rides on,and thats why the seals got wiped out to begin with...

I ended up finding a used steering box at a salvage yard that had low miles fo 50 bucks, and was nice and dry, rather than try to install that bushing,if I could even have located one separately..was cheaper and easier to bolt another box on that fool with the original for me..
