Have 77 K30 frame completely stripped down for painting. Plan on installing a steering box brace when reassembling things, but was wondering about the weld on patch for extra insurance, even though the frame is not cracked or bent. This is going to be mainly an offroad rig with a 454 engine, 400 auto tranny, 205 T-case, 4.56 axles, D60 with as yet undetermined locker, 14FF w/Detroit, 36" Iroks for now but want to go to at least 40's later.
Should we do the weld in patch now while it is simple and easy, or go with just the brace?

Weld it on now, be happy later

That's what I did and at the time it was fairly stock.

Guess it has been decided for me, both the weld on frame reinforcement and bolt on brace will be installed.
Yes, Hydro is on the want list, but not in the budget for now.
Do have an ORD crossover kit for it though.
Already have a Detroit in the rear, but want a selectable locker for the front, and am thinking ARB or OX. Will remain open for now though, got figure out how to sneak both hydro and locker past my lady half's eagle eye on our spending.:wink1:

for my welding patch I cut a section of a frame out of another frame and used it layered it over the existing one welded it up around the edge and a few spot weld in the center. it works great

I would go regular front locker, and use the money saved over a selectable to put on hydraulic assist.

Where do you go offroading?

I was thinking of doing exactly that to mine! :thumb:

I'll keep that in mind for the future. I will eventually have an extra frame left over when I'm all done with my planned projects.

Mainly just running minimum maintenance roads near our place when they are muddy and/or snowed shut. Some ditch hopping and climbing when they are dry. These roads are dirt, and are usually only graded twice a year, once in the spring time to straighten them up for planting season, and again just before harvest starts in the fall. Have to be careful to not tear them up through the summer, it is pretty much an unwritten rule that you stay off them when muddy between spring and fall gradings.
No place to really offroad around here. I don't want to tear up my own pastures or crop ground, and certainly not do that to anyone else. No place close to go to that I know of. A few places for ATV's, but none for big stuff.

Would you be interested in going down to Tuttle Creek with the group from Nebraska that goes?

Martin

Martin,

Possibly interested, but have to get this thing put together and test it out first. We are 200 miles north of the KS border on Hwy 81, and about 5 hours from Manhattan/Tuttle Creek. I used to have beagles, and chased rabbits there a couple times.
When do you guys go?

Couple of times spring through fall. Usually a thread here about setting up a trip now that our local forum died. Couple of farmers in our group so we stay away from planting and harvest seasons.

Yeah, I am a half hour West of US 81 on NE 91, so I know how far it is. It is addicting though.
