i recently changed my steering box after the old one was leaking good. The problem is the new one seems to have no assist from the power steering. I jacked the front end up and i can turn the wheels easily but when trying to turn when not jacked it is near impossible. Is this just a bad box? as it was a rebuilt one or is there something else wrong? The p/s pump is also pretty new and that did work before the installation. Any ideas?

Might still be air in the system. Put it on jacks, and turn slowly from lock to lock with the engine running. I had to do this about 10 times before I got all the air out of it.

Did the same thing to me , even after driving around the block .

Keep working it like he said , to the locks , and hold it a little , like you want to try to nudge it past slightly . The air will leave .

but is there any chance that the box could just be bad as i have bled the system and done the lock to lock for about 10 mins and there is no improvement at all

76blazerguy, im having the exact same problem with my 89' sub 4x4. there are times while driving that it feels ok, some times it turns pretty smooth other times i can barley turn it. looks like i will be trying to bleed it again this weekend.

so do you recommend jacking it up and moving the wheel lock to lock for an hour? I would really like to get it fixed so i can take it out this weekend.

I read somewhere that you need to have both front tires off the ground but just barely so basically there is no weight on them but they still have a slight amount of drag

the best way is to pull the retourn hose route it to a oil pan, then clam a 10" piece of rad hose to the top of your ps ox, and fill with fluid, then crank the moter for 2 seconds only, this will eat up most of the fluid.

use a flash crank the wheels to one side lock, and do it again (refill the ps fluid) then do the other lock.

then pull the plug you had in the retourn port but hold your finger over it and quickly put the retoun line back on and crank it moter again use4 a small flash light to check for any bubles there should be none.

my friend who showd me this does it in 10 min one shot no problems again.

crossing the selinod wires is better with the key off, as the moter wont crank, easyer with the ford selinod like mine.
