The threads on two holes of my steering gear box have been damaged. Can I run a smaller bolt with a lock washer and nut or Do I have to replace the box?

If you go to an auto parts store you can get (I don't remember what they are called from the top of my head) these spring looking things that go in the hole where the hole is stripped. You get one size smaller and put it in. Then you use your bolts and it works fine. I would just get a longer bolt to put in and use with a nut at the back. I will look for what I am talking about and post up. Sorry.

The guy above is probably talking about a heli-coil. They work good, but I would not suggest just putting one in that fits the existing hole, which would require a significantly smaller bolt. To go that route the right way you need to remove the box, drill out the hole to the required size, tap it, install the heli-coil which then reduces the hole back down to the original size of the bolt.

Have you tried running a tap through it? If the threads are at least halfway salvagable that is the way to do it.
