steering box probles

So just got done rebuilding the front end of the truck and now when i turn all the way to the left it feels like its skipping cogs or something.. i can watch it turn going into the steering box then it slips.. is this something that i can fix or should i just chunk the thing and put a new one on.. If i chunk it anyone have suggestions on what to R&R it with?? im on a budget and running out of $ fast so cheap easy fix would be welcome.

Make sure the v belt on the motor is tight, if it slips it will feel like that as well.


Ill check that.. just got back from driving it down the street and back lots of play and movement. by the time i was done going 1 bock the steering wheel was upside down to drive straight.
 
Oh...Hmm that's strange. Sounds like something is loose or worn out really bad and shifting around. Did you tighten the drag link ends, tie rod ends, and both adjusting sleeves?
 
My guess is that you have the larger splined coupler (rag joint) but a steering box with the small splined shaft and it's the coupler slipping on the shaft.

Was either the steering box or the rag joint/coupler recently replaced?
 
As you can see there is a slip in the video. It feels kind of like a bind and when i drove it two blocks by the time i got back the steering wheel was upside down. based on what i saw i am thinking it is the steering box but this is my 1st blazer so i wanted a 2nd set of eyes to see what i was seeing.

All tie-rods and ball joints have been replaced.

I have same problem with my old GMC truck. Shop recommended to just get a new one. I'm thinking junkyard time.
 
you can try and take the box part, but it looks like your gonna need a new unit by the look of the video.

Are there any out there that will make the steering need less turns to turn the tires? or was that part of it being broken? Just always felt like i had to turn forever to get it to turn.

Any suggestions on one to buy?

I never noticed a stock steering box to take a long time to turn. Maybe yours has been going for while and that was causing the need to excessively turn the wheel. Also if you have a smaller steering wheel than stock it takes more rotations to turn the wheels.
 
The steering wheel diameter has nothing to do with it. 1 turn is 1 turn no matter if the wheel is 14 inches or 14 feet.


I would start by making sure the cross bolt on the pitman arm is tight. I have seen that bolt work loose and allow some play in the steering. Also you may try tightening up the sector shaft. On the top of the steering box is an aluminum cover with an Allen screw and a nylock nut on it. Put an Allen wrench in the set screw and use a wrench to back the nut off a couple turns. After the nylock jam nut is backed off, turn the Allen wrench to adjust the sector shaft depth. Unscrewing the set screw will tighten the sector shaft. Turn the screw 1 turn at a time and then turn the steering wheel lock to lock to check your adjustment. Keep going until the slop is worked out of the steering, but make sure you don't go so tight that it binds or you may break the sector shaft or worm gear.

Your right of course about the wheel not really making a diff 1 turn to 1 turn, but it does make it "feel" as though it requires more turning because of the wheel diameter.
