Can I use a 2wd steering box if I'm not using crossover yet? Can I use it with stock steering?

I disagree.

If you get a pitman arm off a Xj and ream it for a drag link you should be able to clock it in the push pull position.

Unless I am missing something...

The factory pitman arm has a "twist" in it, the XJ arm you're talking about won't have that. I'd bet the drag link end would be maxed out just sitting there. The length probably isn't right either.

Here is another question for those who might know more than I do about Gm steering boxes...

How about swapping the original 4x4 steering box's pitman shaft into a 2wd box, could you do that to use one in a pinch on a4x4 ...:dunno:

This is the 2WD box with an XJ pitman arm.

This is a 4WD box with a GM 4" drop pitman arm.

I now see the twist. Good save.

I think it's possible to rig it up as a trail fix just to get back to camp but I would not set it up like that permanently.

The sector shaft is the only difference between a 2wd and 4wd box and most people swap the 4wd sector in favor of the 2wd to go crossover steering.

Reason I asked is I happen to have a good P/S box from a 66 Pontiac Grand Prix that I think is identical to a 2wd truck one,I'd hang onto it if it was useable in one of my 4x4's for a spare....rather than hunt for a used one at a salvage yard if mine craps out.....

I was surprised to actually see 2 older GM trucks like mine at a salvage yard the other day, they now get 100 bucks for a steering box,and they wanted 150 for a hydroboost setup I saw on a 1990 town DPW one ton dump, that had a Dana 60 and a plow on it (didn't dare ask about the dana 60,usually they get at least 500 for those!)--the other truck was a 2wd wrecker body style that was pretty much cannibalized...also saw a 1984 Suburban that had NO frame, just the shell, completely intact!...kinda weird seeing one that way..even had the factory stereo in it still....

That is a big negative, a car box mounts INSIDE the frame rail whereas truck boxes mount OUTSIDE the frame rail so only the sector shaft would be of any use to you.

The car box may steer in the opposite direction. That'd take some getting used to!

Oh well, another thing to toss in the next pile when going to the swap meet to sell leftovers--or post on CL!..:doah:....

That would be a scary steering ride,if it steers the opposite way when you turned the wheel!.....never thought about that!...maybe as scary as the time my rag joint failed doing a 180 degree turn one day,and the wheel just spun freely and the truck kept going straight ahead...

:eek1: This has to be more effective than Ex-lax :eek1:
