So have you ever had a night where everything you touched or tried to fix went to sh!t.

Anyway to the point. The metal plate/gasket that sandwiches between the steering box and the top cap with the adjuster screw that covers the sector shaft. Can I put that gasket in upside down and would that cause it to leak?
I had a leak at the cap, so I got a new metal gasket and installed it tonight and once I fired it up it still leaks?
The metal gasket has that rubber embossed into it and it sticks out more on one side than the other. I faced that side with the rubber toward the cap?

Heres the run down on the steering.
PSC pump and 1.75 assist ram. The top sector cover and the round end cap are tapped for ram. The box is just a old seasoned unit.

Worst case it still leaks, right?

I messed with one some years back. Pretty sure I tried this with no change in the leak. Helicoiled the box and used RTV to stop the leak

I have lots of nights (and days) like that...

Here's my signs..:

Yesterday afternoon about 5:30 PM I decided I'd better check my transfer case and rear diff fluid levels, make sure they had enough in them--wasn't enthused about crawling under the truck with my back in agony, but figured I'd best do it then, because it was going to be near freezing this morning and the next few days ,and I want to use the truck ..

Soon as I got under the truck,my cap hits the exhaust "turn down" spout on one of the mufflers ,and it droops towards the ground--hanging by a thread..:surepal:
So I bend it back & forth till it breaks off...I thought the exhaust tone sounded different yesterday!...not a big deal, but just another pain in my butt thing to have to fix..:mad2:...time to break out the :grind: & :hack: and shorten up the down spout and shove it back in and secure it..it was too close to the rear axle tube anyways..a ton of soot on it and the metal brake line..

Then I proceed to take the skin off my knuckles trying to loosen the stupid filler plug on the NP208...:angry1:...
Well,at least the fluids were close enough to full to not have to bother adding any..:screwy:

Ya Ill take it apart and flip the gasket over, not sure that will make any difference? And if it doesnt I font know if RTV will hold back the fluid pressure?

Maybe time for a high dollar box, PSC, Redhead?

The right stuff will hold pressure

I'd be afraid of RTV getting in places it could cause trouble..
A thicker gasket would be better maybe..

Maybe the pitman shaft cover is warped, could you file it flat ,or does it have a raised groove or something that would prevent that from being possible ?..
I have glued some emery cloth on my table saw table and use it as a flat level surface to take the warp out of small engine cylinder heads so the new gasket wouldn't still leak compression..rub the cylinder head back & forth till its flat again..

Im at a loss on this thing.. Tried flipping the gasket plate thing over an put a thin layer of right stuff on both surfaces and guess what it still leaks?

Only thing I can come up with is that when I took the cap off the sector shaft and I tapped it for the assist that I dont have it adjusted right and could it not be letting the cap sit down tight?
If that was the case i would have to loosen the stud right so the sector gear would move up thus letting the cap seal down tighter?

Does this make any sense? Im mostly frustrated at this point.

If that's the case then when you tighten down the cap it would make the steering hard, too much friction on the sector shaft.
I would look at the surface for any imperfections
