on my 1974 blazer i need a new steering box and to replace the hoses. is this a pretty easy job for someone with basic skills and tools. should i just run a stock re-built 4x4 steering box?

Its an easy remove and replace if you are going like for like .

You need to get a pan and remove the low pressure hose from the metal line going into the box , its the one that uses hose clamps , and point that hose towards the pan . Let it drain as you go grab a beer .

With a line wrench ( I use a regular wrench , cheapy guy I am ) remove the hoses from the top of the box . You will only reuse the small section of hard line from the low pressure side .

You may need to remove the pump if you have no room to work , to remove the high pressure hose end behind the pump .

Now box removal is easy . Just remove the bolt that holds the pitman arm on , and drop the pitman arm . That way you don't have to play with rod ends ( assuming they are good anyways ) . Undo the bolts on the sterring ragjoint/coupler . If you are smart , you can leave the steering shaft where it is , undo the bolts that hold the box on , and drop the box away from the steering shaft without loosening anything on your steering shaft .

Now to put it back together , put new ragjoint on the new box ( larescorp.com makes nice steel belted ones ) and tighten retaining bolt . Put a pice of tape on the output shaft and turn ragjoint and count the turns of the output shaft , find what seems like the center , and leave it there so the pitman arm can go back on later and steering wheel should be where ya left it . Now set box down . Grab a beer . Put pressure hose on pump , and new loe pressure hose on pump ( cut to same length as old , or add some to route your way ) . Put box back up and into the steering column shaft , having helper helps . Tighten all bolts . Install hoses . Grab abeer and then come back and double check all bolts and hoses . Add fluid , start and turn box lock to lock while stationary , add more fluid as it just got sucked in to box , turn lock to lock again , check fluid level .

If it feels tight while driving , there is air left in there . Go park and work that thing lock to lock until its gone and shes smooth as butter . :D

I am never gonna bother , I found the guy that machines dropped pitmans for 4x4 boxes for crossover with stock box . When I have some money to psare I am getting one :D

all i would add is save old hoses to use as spares, and old rag joint :D
oh and while you got the box out put in a brace

Where can you get them at?

I found it in this post http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114506
I went into the user profile and got the weblink , couldn't find it on the site . Emailed the guy , he said he was making some more . As soon as I have the cash I am getting one . I will be going crossover with front to back in the trailbox for emergencies :D

This is cool

Thats really cool. He has some cool stuff on his website too, I like how he countersinks the holes in his axle shims to releive stress on the center pin. It is kinda pricey, but probably cheaper and alot easier than a whole new steering box.

Cheap Autozone 2wd gearbox is 139.99 plus 85.00 core for a 77 K5 .

Junkyard or used 2wd box is cheaper , but will need seals etc , I know my gearbox leaked like a sieve .

Just the sector shaft is doable , but then you still need to buy an arm .

exactly on the 3rd...

2wd box for free from a friend...
took each sector shaft out and swapped them.... never removed my box....
and used ord xover for steering arm to passenger side arm... NICE setup :wink1:

so i could just run a 2wd steering box and its a direct bolt on?

From a truck yes , and you have to buy a drop pitman arm for the 2wd box .

Do not use car boxes , they bolt on the inside framerail .

no vans and no s-10s or el caminos, either

has to be C/K series)full series) truck
1/2 through 1 ton

good luck

so after buying the drop pitman arm would it be worth it? is it as strong?

it is just as strong and you will eliminate the crappy push pull system. get a hydro assist from rocklogic4x4.com $250!!
