What year did they switch to metric threads for the lines ?

I thought it was always metric, but they changed the type of fitting around '81, so I guess they'd probably have gone metric around then too. Pre-1981 uses a flare [edited-thanks boss!] fitting, post-1980 uses a deeper connector with longer flare nuts.
I had three different boxes for my truck, a '79, an '83, and an '88, and two had the different fittings, while one was a hybrid of both.
Is this for your '72?

65' to 79': Flare Fittings

80' and up: O-ring Fittings

FWIW, you can switch the lines on the power steering pumps (not boxes I know now!) back and forth if you need to, from standard to metric, or vice versa. Not sure if you can unthread the fittings on the steering box though and swap them...not sure if the threads are tapped into the box, or if they are a removable piece as well.

Threads were definately tapped into box on the 7? box I had from the junkyard, and I'm very sure on the others I had as well. I know, stripped them...

Thanks for the info. My 72 box is leaking bad and i have a good 80 box somewhere in the garage i was thinking about swaping them out i all ready have new lines for my 72 and was hoping to use them on the other box. Guess i will just have to try it, Thanks

You should be able to make it work, although '72 may have been using that older style pump. Not positive, but I know that it may be a possibility. And if its the old style pump, not sure how much interchanges.

Inorder to use your 80' box in your garage, you will need to swap out your PS pump for an 80' and newer pump. That will have the O-ring style fitting. Then you will need to get a new hose for an 80' and up O-ring style hoses. Then put your new pump in and your new box in and connect the new hose and you're done. My 89' has Flare fitting style pump and box and hoses. I had to do that b/c I got the wrong AGR box from AGR, so I had to switch everything around. That would be your best bet SMP. Or, just find another box from a pre 80'.

Oh, and no, they do not make hoses that have flare fitting on one side and O-ring on the other. You can probably get that custom made though.

You can swap the fitting on the power steering pump, to accept whichever style your box is, at least I was able to on mine. The fitting was a standard thread setup to remove from the pump, just don't let the valve fall on the ground when you remove it. You still need both an old and new (metric/standard)_pump to get the correct fitting from though.
