Okay everyone,

I just installed my SECOND bad steering box for the day! My original one had a bad sector shaft, my first new "reman" one had an issue that I can only describe as "jumping". It was going from power steering to manual and back, I checked and proved that the system had been bled of air, and that the pump seemed to be working good. the second bad box I literally just finished installing, it turns easy to the right, and is very HARD to turn to the left, and as such pulls to the left HARD.

How many boxes should I expect to go through before I find a good one? I am growing very tired of doing this job, but I also don't want to drop $700 to get a brand new one for no good reason, and no guarantee that the same issues wont exist!

The new "reman" boxes were purchased from oreilly's... Should I go get my core charge back and go to napa??

Can anyone offer more tips and suggestions?????

Thanks,
Scoutcamper

Most chain store remans are going to be by Cardone.
The one I bought from Orielly was as well as the one I looked at from Napa other than more money for the same thing at Napa.

No problem with mine other than after about seven years it’s started to leak at the pitman output.

Not a bad idea to get your core back and go somewhere else for a different run boxes.

If you want to spend the money look into Red Head steering boxes. Have good reviews.

A tip I would offer is to also replace the pump and dump all the fluid. Sometimes junk moves from the box into the valve on the pump

If it is not your daily driver, check with Scott(4x4high) to see if he is still rebuilding boxes.

Im dreadding this. I put a 2wd shaft in my 4wd box but so much slop [tried adjusting] so thought about remans.. but i dunno now..

I did finally get one good one, I drove 3hrs round trip to buy one from Brake Part Supply.

I had a red head back when I was doing all the wrenching on my dads 7.3, it was great. Maybe I will look into one of those when this box goes bad.

Hopefully this isn't highjacking the thread too much but I was debating having one rebuilt by Red Head or West Texas Off-Road too but their costs are pretty close to what a PSC steering box runs from ORD or Summit. Like most people in this thread I'm not looking forward to rolling the dice on an expensive reman unit and these three companies all offer ported & tapped boxes in case I wind up doing hydro-assist in a couple years. Anyone have any experience with PSC's steering boxes? Wondering if that'd be a better option than Red Head or West Texas or what you guys would recommend.

FWIW a rebuilt Red Head box runs $276 + $110 for port & tap + $150 redundable core + shipping. West Texas runs $580 for a rebuilt, ported & tapped box including a $250 core for a 2wd box or $175 for a 4wd box + shipping. The PSC boxes run $333 for stock reman or $428 for ported & tapped at Summit with no core and free shipping.
