I was doing some maintenance on my 1986 K5 and when looking for steering wheel play I found that if turning normaly = very little play but if I try small jogging movements I can get the steering wheel to turn 180 without the tires moving. Is this a sign of trouble or is that the way the gears work in the box? I have never had one open.

thats not normal or safe. my first geuss would be that the splines in the rag joint or on the end of the box are stripped. that would give you the ability to turn slowly but when the wheel is jerked quickly they would spin past.

check that connection. it will look like this and connect the column to the box.
