Steering column issue.

My steering column has gotten loose where the knuckle is for tilt. Is this a simple fix? Replace whole column (go to a manual one)? This is a new issue.

I recently swapped in a NV4500 and with this issue popping up, I think I am just going to go with a manual column (and xj steering shaft).

Do I need to find a manual column for the same year as mine ('89)? Would that limit me to CC? Are there any aftermarket upgrades to be had here?

Is mine safe to drive while I get everything I need? It feels loose but not overly, I guess. Will it just remain loose or is it possible to loose all steering?
 
You don't really need to worry about year too much, but you'll want one with the same wiper/high beam setup, that changed either in '83 or '84 as I recall.

What do you mean CC? Cruise control?

I've seen people driving with the column so loose I can't believe it didn't fall apart. As long as it's not 4" of play you are probably fine, as long as you don't wait to address it. The slop comes from the bolts backing out, as the bolts back out further the slop increases, so at SOME point it would just fall apart, but it isn't going to have a little slop then all of a sudden completely fail on you.

Thanks. CC = Crew Cab (I always thought, but could be very wrong).

My issue started a few weeks ago. I will start looking for a replacement when we return from our back-country trip tomorrow. We are taking the Burb, hope she does well.
 
Body style had nothing to do with the column, distance from steering wheel to steering box didn't change, so any truck column will work.

Check craigslist for trucks being parted along your route. lol

At least with my trucks, 83 = wiper control on dash, 84 = wiper control on column.

The loose tilt column is a very typical issue, and it is easily solved. Switching columns also works, as long as the new column doesn't have the same problem. :wink1:
 
Why not rebuild current column and why apart shave Automatic shifter off? Least then you know what you have! I had a buddy who did it least 4 times and 95% of people did not even notice it if you do it correctly.

Youtube links works like this.

All youtube links have a format.

If you look at it, it says- "youtube.com/watch?v=" then a bunch of numbers/letters.

First part just says you are going to youtube.com and ready to watch a video, IE- the "watch?v=" part. (v= video)

The letters/numbers designate the specific video you are linking to, or browsing too etc.

To embed a video, when you click the youtube link thing, you get something that looks like this- {youtube}{/youtube} w/brackets of course.

All you have to do is put the numbers/letters after the "v=" between the brackets.

So it would look like this-
{youtube}5Zsw4n8XtsU{/youtube}, but with the brackets.
