i was told in order to get to the blinker device i had to remove the small circle clip that holds down the steeering lock ring. turns out i did not have to do this, but hind sight. now i cant get the steering lock ring back into the groove it goes in because there is a strong spring that pushes the steering lock plate up. anyone know hwat im talking about please assist me.

needs a tool, but what kind and what is it.

The job is made easy with a lock plate removal/installer tool. Most auto parts stores sell them and are about $15.00-20.00. You can do it with a little more effort if you have someone help you to push the clip down into the groove while you depress the lock plate with both thumbs.

The spring is strong but I had my fiancee snap the clip on while I pushed it down. Give that a try as mentioned.
 
I just replaced the turn switch in my column yesterday evening. With the help of SweetK30, we had the column torn down and back together in about half an hour. I borrowed the tools from Autozone as mentioned above. I could see how you can do it without the tools, but why?!?! "Work smarter not harder"
