Sounds crazy but a buddy that knows a fair amount about Fords said that the older late 70's style uses different length steering columns based on manual (shorter) or automatic, about 2" different. Anyone know if the might be true of GM columns?

I have never actually measured them. But never noticed any difference as far as position to the driver. Obviously there isn't a difference below the mount as it would require a different intermediate shaft.
I feel very confident that the '67-'72 trucks had one length. I never saw much difference when they were out of the truck.
I would bet that it's a Ferd thing. Why would they do it? Not sure, maybe just to make more parts less interchangeable.
