Sorry to bother, but I get way overwhelmed looking through all the threads that come up in the searches.:doah:

I just got a FREE steering gear box. I don't know if it's the correct one to go to future cross-over. If it is the correct one, can anyone tell me if it's possible to "bench bleed" it. The reason I ask, is there was quite a bit of crud in one of the ports. I was hoping to pump fluid or a cleaner of some sort, through the box to clear it of any "stuff" to avoid contaminating the existing system. While I'm at it, can I just spray an engine cleaner/degreaser on it to degrease it, along with some manual labor.

Thanks for any and all help.

Here's some pics, hope it's the "right" one, I have no idea what it came off, either does the guy I got it from. He said it has been sitting on the shelf for a few years.:dunno:

That would appear to be the correct 2wd box for crossover.

x2 on the bench bleeding info. I just finished rebuilding mine and I'd like to get as much air out as i can before i hook it back up and finish the bleed.

I guess I will attempt to just rig up some lines with the fittings to go to the gear box and use a pump I transfer liquids with at work. Hopefully, i can run a quart or 2 through the gearbox to try to flush any gunk out of it. I may give it a try this weekend, though I'm in no hurry yet. I still need to decide where to get the rest of the kit. I'm leaning towards ORD. My goal is to get the truck drivable by the Bloomsburg Fun Fest. My brother (udy) and a bunch of his friends go every year. I have yet to make it with a functioning truck. After the crossover, I still need to do the SYE and have driveshafts shortened, then shocks and I'm good to go. Next year will be gears and motor!

dont bother bench bleading. bolt it all in and have wheels off ground. cycle the steering wheel 15-20 times with no motor running and recheck fluid level add as needed. do this till level styles the same. 2-3 sets does it. then fire up and cycle again should be good to go.

if you have hydro boost its a bit diffrent. cant recall now but search it and it will come up been talked about before.

and that box pic posted looks like a 73-80 style with 45* flare fittings not 81-up orings. and some older boxes had a smaller input shaft. newer was bigger wont fit unless you swap the rag joint or shaft complete.

Probably a stupid question, but is there such a thing a an adapter fitting to go from the flare style on the box to the o-ring style of the line? I know in the HVAC field, there are all kinds of fittings to go from one thing to another.

SweetK30, thanks, those are the things I needed to know. Maybe that box will end up back on the shelf to go ahead and look for the "right" one cheap.

Thanks for the help. You seem to know quite a bit about these trucks. Your posts are always helpfull!

Well you could do the same thing out of the truck if you are worried about contaminating the system, all you need is to turn the shaft or the arm and fluid will go from one port to the other, I do that when I want to ship them, clears out all the fluid.
As for the lines you can make a line that fits your box and the pump you have.

Please do! Hopefully I will haave a usable truck by July. I'm hoping on going to Bloomsburg. Just did a side job today, now I can afford the bolt in steering brace! I gotta get some more work for some more money for some more parts! Anyone that wants to come play, the pit is open to all!

BTW, it looks like you're only a little over an hour away! I could probably get a few people together for the weekend, house is open. Oh, I better check with the wife on that, but it is my house too. She is a pretty cool lady though, I don't see any problems with a get together!
