I dug into the front end this past weekend to see what needed replacing and it all looked bad. So I did some CK5 and online searching and ordered what I thought are the proper replacement parts for these service items. 24hrs later I'm not feeling so confident and was hoping to get a second opinion.

This pic shows the parts I ordered (in yellow) and here are the part numbers I ordered. I'd appreciate any assistance as the past posts about these parts are dated or confusing to me.

1-Moog DS841
2-Moog ES449L (Think I got this one wrong)
10 - Moog ES2027L
11 - Moog ES2026R
12 - Raybestos 4251002
17 - Monroe SC2913
18 - Raybestos 5001070
19 - Raybestos 5051156

Can't tell if right or wrong without knowing what year ur truck is.

However, the moog es449l that you thought you got wrong goes to both the steering arm and the right front tie rod for a 73-76 truck. So sayeth summit racing and rockauto. Looks correct to me, but again, would need to know what truck you have.

Guess I kinda neglected to add that important info. Appreciate the help.

If it looks like the parts don't fit, stop now, and post a picture of your front axle cover, showing the shape and bolts.
Plus maybe the ends of the axle also, and how many lugs does it have?

Don't forget, at almost 40 years of age, is more than a little possible that its not the original axle.
And if its ever been owned by anyone here, its darn near certain its not original.........

I recall back in the day many GM trucks in the 77-87 vintage range had different tie rod ends if they had the 4:10 ratio axles on 1/2 and 3/4 tons..the Moog catalog always had two listings for them..

I've run into two types over the years..one design had a long bar with two short tie rods, the other design had the one pictured here with the ling rod with the stabilizer shock mount and one tie rod molded into the rod,and the other side was a typical short tie rod that threaded on..I'm not sure if one setup can be swapped for the other or not..

Fordum-I'll be sure to post up some pics if the parts arrive and everything is different. I'm nearly positive that this axle and steering components are the stock 1974 ones. Nothing else on the truck has been modified that I can see.

Diesel4Me- I cut/pasted that illustration from the LMC catalog and erased the other center link configurations. The one pictured is the one I have.

The main issue I'm having is that I ordered from three different vendors (rockauto, amazon, and summit) and their descriptions of replacement parts are all different. For example, item # 2 is described as a Tie Rod end, right hand side but it doesn't distinguish between the drag link tie rods and center link tie rods. Or maybe it does and I'm not seeing it.

Appreciate the responses guys. I suppose when the parts arrive I'll know for sure then.

Based on Rockauto catalog, your parts list checks out.

Thanks Rebel. I'm hoping it works out but as we all know, 'hope' is not the best strategy. I suppose it's all part of the fun in restoring these old trucks, sort of like putting together a puzzle that happens to be covered in 40yr old grease and dirt. :waytogo:

First issue

received some of the replacement parts this evening and as I was putting them together I ran into an issue with a tie rod (item # 10). The end that connects to the steering arm is tapered like a lava lamp. Meaning its fat in the middle. What's the procedure to put this thing on?

Still goes on normally. The taper towards the threads should fit into the pitman. The ball-end taper should be a non-issue. It will be covered by the dust boot and full of grease.

If I understand your situation correctly.

I haven't taken the old one off the pitman arm yet so I'm not sure what my situation is either. Guessing I'll need to use a press of some sort to get the arm over the fat middle taper?

No press. It won't go past the taper. The ball-end taper will still be exposed - or rather sort of hidden by the dust boot. It's all good. The taper in the pitman arm matches the taper on the threaded end of the tie rod. Once you get it tightened down, it ain't going any farther.

Aha...and the light in my head comes on. Thanks Rebel, I was fully prepared to make it fit flush.
