The truck is on jack stands. Crossover with what is supposed to be a rebuilt steering box. I don't have anyone to hold the steering wheel, so not sure if it's just moving, but the key is out and column is locked. I'm grabbing the tire and shaking it left to right. Is this right? (note:draglink is not tight yet, I know)

That box looks like it got put together at 4:59 on a friday at Cardone and the guy forgot to lash it.

Unhook the draglink and leave the pitman arm on. There should be a SLIGHT amount of movement in the pitman arm before the input on the steering box starts moving. My guess is theres a crap load there.

And the good news is you can fix it with the allen adjustment on the cap of the steering box by tightening it up. Theres quite a few detailed posts on here to walk you through that.

I'm not going to say that's wrong, There can be a light bit of movement in the steering wheel when your doing this. i know your saying it's locked but how much can the wheel turn even with it locked (1/16) of a turn? So that little bit of steering wheel motion plus the acceptable slop in the box and you might just be fine.

Is there a problem with steering or are you just checking?

first, it looks liek the steering box is not tight enough, it is moving a bit when you were going slow.
Second, the steering box needs to be adjusted, but is it dry or is it full?
If it's not full and purged yet I wouldn't start adjusting anything yet.
The sound of it clancking looks like it's dry.

truck hasn't been on the road in a year. The entire steering is new, so I have no time with it. The box was dry in this shot. I did come back and move the driver side tire back and forth and noticed the steering wheel moving.

I also noticed the box moving in the picture, but I can't see how. I'll need to look into that, but right now I have a weld on, bolt on, longer bolts with nuts, and they're all tight. HOWEVER, it's never been on the street since these mods. I'm hoping to take it in this week for some finalizing before I can drive it. I guess at that time, when it hits the pavement, I'll know.

well if you have the weld on patch, sometimes it's not curved enough to give room for the hump in the box to fit right so although your bolts are tight, you are still hitting a high spot and it could move ever so slightly to be seen like that.
I am not saying it's all of your play, but it's compounding the issue.
As I said check that and fill the system up and bleed it, and then see if it needs to be adjusted, it did look like the sector shaft was moving quite a bit.
