i have a 76 k5, i just changed the rag joint and what a difference. my problem came when i took it all appart. the splined coupler that goes on the steering gear was mashed on the shaft and the splines are now half crap, all the splines on the gear box are ok.

so im thinking about swaping the jeep steering shaft beings that i need a new part, but how do i know if my steering box is compatable?

does anyone know if the splines on the 76 steering box will work with the jeep shaft? i have to go to the bone yard and only want to go once.

thanks
mike

i did read threw that, good read, but it says 73 up. im only asking because they used three different boxes acording to lmc, 73-76, 77-79, 80-91. i have also read somewhere that 77 and up will work, which means i need a different gear box, and i can grab that and the steering shaft at the same time in the yard.

just trying to save myself some time

I believe that all '73-91 power steering boxes are 3/4" 30 spline at the box. At the least my '74 is as was the '84 box I swapped in.

I suspect the bit about "'77-up" comes from manual steering being dropped for '77.

Now, the other end, at the column, is a whole other problem. I believe your '76 has a 1" splined end, as opposed to the "double-D" style on later columns. I don't know what the XJ shaft fits as I ended up just buying a Borgeson shaft. (Spendy, but direct fit to my particular setup.)

I ended up welding the old spline end from Chevy shaft to the Jeep shaft, works fine been that way for a few years now.
