Feel a bit silly for starting a new thread for this, and i did search around a bit with not a ton of answers to find so...

Are there any bolt on, i.e. direct replacement options to replace the rag joint??

If i understand correct, the XJ mod requires some modifications and is not a direct bolt on swap?

There are aftermarket u-joint style, in different sizes too. Also the shaft above the joint (flat on two sides) can be replaced if need be, maybe by a local hot rod or race shop if not online.

borgenson (sp) has something you could use

but seriously, if you cut your own steak, you can install the XJ

XJ shaft is not a direct bolt on to the 1st column. There's an XJ shaft thread in either the garage or the tech forum. Makovai put some detail in on what he did to make one work.

you got me there, I did not think about you 1st gen guys. Does it fit only square body or only half cab? My 85 was bolt on (need to notch column side, hence "if you can use a steak knife, you can use a file"). Anything outside of bolt on requires welding a different end, which is still pretty simple.

Check out the Borgenson (again, not sure on spelling). Try EBay for a quick reference

Wait...maybe it was the steering box end. I don't remember at this point. Either way, it wasn't the "standard" XJ shaft install.

If you can get past the cost of it, the Borgeson one is a direct bolt-in with no welding....

Around $120 IIRC.

Hmmm.... I know I had one installed on my '72.

I'll have to check my receipt pile (THAT could take a while!) to see what part number they recommended originally.

EDIT:

Good News/Bad News:

I threw out all the receipts for stuff I no longer own, so I don't have the actual part number or receipt. However I have notes describing it as a "24 inch telescoping steering shaft"....but at a price of $251. :yikes: What the hell was I thinking back then? :dunno:

DUDE....:eek1: Now I don't feel as bad after the nut-shot of my order with high angle driveline this morning. 2g's is a lot, but at least driveshafts are heavier...feels like you get more:haha::haha:

On a side note mine came with some type of heavy u-joint type steering shaft. I'll see if there's any info on it...

Edit: I don't see any info at all on the shaft but I'll snap some pics tomorrow and post them up.
