With the truck running i can grab the steering shaft and twist it from 12~2-3 o clock position back and forth. I have noticed some play in the steering wheel but always just passed it off as thats how these old truck are. Is it time for a new box? Can i just tighten the box? Thanks for the help!

fwiw i did search and found ALOT of responses to tightening the steering box. But not a answer directed towards my qestion.

I would say as long as the rag joint on the shaft isn't ripped or really worn out, that the box needs to be adjusted

I just replaced the rag joint thinking that was it, and it fixed nothing. I will try adjusting the box. Thanks.

also check the frame for cracks were the box bolts up.

then get back to us.

and if you dont know how to correctly adjust the box dont as you can burn it up REAL fast if over tight.

The frame has no cracks and the bolts are tight. When I got the truck I removed the box and checked for any cracks or warps around the bolt holes. When I installed the box back on I used red lock tight to make sure they wouldn't back out. And every sunday I check it.

Haha! None of the bolts should get loose using red locktite. I hope you never have to remove the bolts again. I think it takes a blow torch to remove bolts with red locktite.

I would think blue would work fine for holding the box bolts in, wouldn't it? (asking because I'm putting my box back in tomorrow)

I have a Ingersoll Rand 1/2" 600 FT/LB impact gun, nothing is ever to tight. And i used grade 8 bolts from fastenal, wich i HIGHLY recomend, do not re use our old bolts. I have read so many stories about those bolts backing them selfs out, or shearing off, and then tearing the frame, that i really didnt wanna take that chance on. I a firm beiliver is in murphy's law, so i just eleminate him in everything i do. LOL
