Can some one inlighten me on the xj steering swap I have read bits and pieces but can't find a good complete thread on it. I have tried to do a search but still can't find what I am looking for. What is the reason for doing it and what all is involved? THANKS

I think the $25 I spent to become a paying member is the best money I've spent on my truck. You should do it...you won't regret it.

Anyway, my shaft is out of an 86 XJ. Melt the pins in the shaft with a torch and compress that sucker with a BFH. Spread the ends of the shaft so they will fit around the gear box and steering column....test fit and then grind a groove in the steering column to allow the bolt to fit over the end of the column (just like it look on the Jeep you pull the shaft from)...bolt that sucker up.

On second thought, pay the $25 and read the article (with pics). It takes all of about 20 minutes to do the swap.

Benefits are the loss of the rag joint which equals less slop and a better feel of for the truck.

I'm an idiot and I figured it out very easily.

Mollyman , you have it set NOT to receive emails from members. I was going to send you the article but.....

you don't pry apart the end of the XJ shaft that goes on the steering box. i HIGHLY recommend against that. it's splined and slides right on. the end up at the column needs to be spread a tad, but is OK since it's boxed.

To be a stick in the mud I don't think you should send non-members articles in the member's only sections. $25 isn't too much to ask for a years amount of info:mad:

End: Poo-Lice Patrol:rolleyes:

Maybe he will see what hes missing , and want to join up.
Or he could be like I was for 3-4 months and be flat broke.
And will join up as soon as he has $25.
