Fixing up my sloppy tilt shaft this weekend, but if it is too far gone i may swap in a non tilt shaft from a 79, but wanted to wire my signal switch in to the older one, so I can have intermitant wipers on the shaft, wireing is not a problem I can make that work, but will the signal from my 89 fit in to a older shaft like that?

No. IIRC the dimmer and wiper are integral on the later housings. That's why your '89 has the large bulge where the lever mounts. (entirely separate piece that sits in there) You need to change the upper half of the column to make it work.

OK, is that upper par of the shaft swapable with a non tilt? been a few years since i had a non tilt, i never use it, but this new truck i got offf ebay was loose and in the last week has gotten REALLY bad, flopping around and if it is moved too much the truck dies.

need to get it fixed befor it falls off!

Good point. I *believe* the upper bowl (plastic housing) is interchangeable tilt/non-tilt, but I can't guarantee it.

Have you pulled the '89 far enough apart to tighten the bolts that loosen up?

There is at least one good thread here that tells you how to do it.

Non tilt parts do not interchange with a tilt. I tried it several years ago.
Even the ignition switch is different between tilt and non tilt.
