Steering Shaft - XJ or Borgeson ???

Ok, been reading for hours about this steering stuff. Have some slop … want to change the shaft. The only thing I’m worried about with the XJ is the modifying, etc… just doesn’t set well with me. I want something that I can bolt on easily with 10 min because I’m stupid with most of this stuff.

So my question… I’m looking at the Borgeson shafts below. They have (2) different shafts – one with rag joint, one with u joint (just like XJ) My understanding is the better u joint one would help more with steering response. However, my concern with that one is vibration in the wheel. My understanding is the rag joint model will help “dampen” any vibration better… but the steering improvement (response) may not be as good compared to u joint model?????

Your thoughts? Also, any of you that did the XJ..do you feel any more vibration in the wheel?

My truck now (with 35 swampers) has ZERO vibration in the steering wheel. It also tracks straight down the road and no hop. My only issue is the play in the steering …even after a new steering box.

I've done both, when the xj shaft wore out I put the borgeson one in, the one w/o the rag. I feel no extra or bad vibes thru the wheel. IMO the borgeson one is well and above a better unit. You WILL have to shorten the Borg. shaft, no biggie, just follow the directions and cut and drill the correct holes.
 
why in the hell would borgeson would make a part that we have to "cut" is beyond me. No thanks. Again, 1st grade level here... dont want to cut, bend or anything... just bolt on.
 
Borgeson makes a damper/u-joint combo that replaces the rag joint. It's what I used on mine. There are so many steering variations, they probably have a hard time making custom shafts for every vehicle, thats why you may have to cut the shaft to length.

I have the Borgeson u-jointed shaft. Measure twice, cut once. Simple ! No vibes or shakes. I even have DIY poly bushing motor mounts and still no vibes thru the wheel.
 
you could try replacing the rag on your current setup. my burb has no noticable play now that all the rodends are new. If all yours are good I'd just try a new rag
 
a new rag joint will help a lot if the stock shaft is still in good shape other than that.mine is ten times better with just replaceing it with anether good shape junkyard piece.its only 2 bolts so it is very 1st grade upgrade.:doah:
 
Box came from Napa. Yes, I'm going to replace the rag joint first and see what happens. Looks like just (2) 9/16 bolts and it slides out? Or do I have to also remove that (1) 12 point star bolt as well ?
 
also - looks like the rag joints are hard to find. What parts store would have them.. or online resource ?

Depending on how serious your first grade level comments are, be careful of those replacement rag joints you get in the "help" section at auto parts stores. I've read a lot about those failing very fast. A new joint is suppose to much better, but they are expensive.

Also, replacing the joint may require removing the shaft or the steering box unless the shaft can collapse enough to remove the joint.

I tried the XJ shaft but, it wasn't gonna work because the older columns were splined,not the 'D' shaft.
Anyway, I went with

Because GM had so many different combos, you'll have to call them with your info on your set-up.
I did'nt have to cut anything, it just bolted on.
 
Scott, what do you suggest doing to the shaft to minimize play? I mean it comes right apart and the plastic pieces are gone that used to hold it in place.

I was thinking about just putting some grease on it. Will that do? Or would you recommend something else? I can't weld, so thats out (thinking of those who have welded on nuts and used bolts to hold the shaft in place tight- without going through the shaft of course)

any other ideas? I'll probably just put the grease and see how that goes.

Time for another shaft in this case. When you get another shaft the ONLY thing you should do to it in order to use it in our rigs is to compress the shaft so that it fits on our rigs. I simply held the shaft and then hit it on the ground until it started to move then carefully pushed it to the required length. You SHOULD NOT take it apart for any reason, some you just have to drill out the plastic "lock pins" then compress the shaft.

I'd hate to have wasted my money on buying this thing and having it shipped across the US and into Canada :doah:

Other than the missing clips, it appears to be in good condition..

There have been some people on here that have taken them apart while trying to make them fit and end up having pieces come out or they destroy them while taking it apart. There is no reason to take the shaft apart in the first place like i've already said. I HIGHLY doubt you can buy any of the pieces for it even from the dealer so if I were you I would be looking for an "unmolested" XJ shaft and then just compress it like you're supposed to to make it fit and then do the mod to the steering column and install it.
 
You can get the stock rag joint repair kit from any auto parts store. The kits are only about 15.00 and very easy to install.
