What is the diameter of the stock steering wheel? I am going to order a grant replacement for mine but i dont want to get one that is to small. thanks. oh and i would go measure myself but thats hard when my truck is on the other side of the world.

Well, I can tell you that from '78 to '88 the steering wheel measured 16" - both the standard/custom deluxe and the cheyenne/silverado ones. This I know for a fact. I seem to recall that the earlier 70's wheels actually measured 17", but someone else will have to set you straight on that, as I'm not sure. And the '89 to '91 wheel I don't know a thing about, other than that they look like crap.

I'm getting ready to ditch my thinassed steering wheel from my 88 which is the same wheel used from 73 for the one from a 89-91 as they have a thicker grip and are more comfortable and look nicer.

'73 to to '76 or '77 were actually moderately different. They were probably still 16" though, though I've heard 17" somewhere about something...

It's funny how tastes differ though; I've pulled Grant wheels off of both my K5s that POs put in to replace them with the 80's stock Silverado 16" custom wheel, since to my mind that one can't be beat for this application. The K5 is a truck, not a sports car. I don't know what the hell the guy was thinking who put a 13" Grant F1 wheel in one of mine. :dunno:

I love my stock steering wheel! This steering wheel was used from '73-'77. Then in '78 they came out with two different options, one standard and one custom that they used up to '87 or '88...

Ah, see, so I did have my years straight. ;)

And of course the '69 to '72 was another deal altoghether. Yours is still a 16" though?

Yeah '67-'72 had the really large steering wheels (not sure the diameter). Not sure how many styles there were for those years if there were more than one.

I'm not sure if mine is 16" I've never measured it. I'll have to check that out.

yeah i dont like how big and thin the stock one is. i also think its ugly for my application, with that being said i think craigs fits right at home. ok, so it looks like i am going to get the 15" grant steering wheel. thanks for all the input guys.

I have a grant on mine too, and the horn does work.

I did keep the factory one but I need to find the horn button.

The 73-87 style are 16" the newer, fatter style are 15". I am pretty sure the 67-72 were 17". I want one of the 67-72 wheels for my Crewcab project...

I have the same one as Poly 383. Love it! However I did have a problem with the horn set -up the way the Grant directions recommend. The center piece kept popping off causing the horn to blow. I finally mounted a micro push button ( from Radio Shack ) on the center bell and glued the button stationary. I wish Grant would offer a premium horn button option ( a real momentary contact switch ) instead of their cheasy set up.

I forgot the part number , but its one of the four common Grant ones that are always on hand at the major parts stores .

My horn used to pop off too if I hit it too hard , or hit bumps . Its the cheaper horn kit that does it . I ended up fixing it by slightly bending the edges in at the bottom of the button so it grips the horn part better .

I have never been a fan of putting a steering wheel that is smaller than 15" in anything other than a VW Bug. I like the '89-'91 K5 steering wheel but the wheel I like more now is the '92-'94 Chevy Lumina wheel. Here's a pic of it:
