Steering wheel free spins?

My truck's steering wheel started to free spin after hitting a bump the other day, now I can't turn the truck. At first I thought it was the steering box, as it was going bad, so I replaced it, but then when trying to reattach the steering shaft to the box, I realized that the wheel just free spun. Do I need to replace the entire column, or is there another fix? I'm sure it's something between the steering wheel and the shaft in the engine bay. Help please, truck is not in a good spot, and I would rather fix in place than tow!

Not sure what that is exactly lol but nothing in the engine bay moves when I spin the steering wheel. It literally feels like it isn't attached to anything.

Feels more like stripped splines than breakage... Is there anything on the column itself that coulda stripped? And is it repairable without removal of the column?

TILT column or not? Factory steering wheel or not? I guess I would be taking the wheel off to see whats wrong

find out if it's your splines at the steering wheel
I have an upper shaft that's above the tilt ball you can have for shipping
unless it's non-tilt

A guy I knew along time ago had the same thing happen, turned out the splines on the steering column stripped out after he installed an aftermarket steering wheel. Pull the steering wheel like the other poster said and it should be obvious what's stripped. It will be much easier to swap the whole column out than to try to replace the shaft inside the existing column if that's what's broken.

here is my tilt shaft
with outer plastic
if it looks the same as yours, it will work

$4 says it's the aftermarket wheel splines....

considering what the materials of each are made out of, your bet only has a 2-5 odds. So you need one more dollar to place your bet. Sorry it's the rules
the shaft is running 10-1

Hope you're right! It's a Grant wheel, if that means anything. Doesn't look to be that high quality....

EDIT: It was the steering wheel splines. They are stripped out pretty badly. I'm going to pick up a wheel tomorrow, and hope the splines on the shaft aren't too damaged to grab. Thanks guys!

pay up sucka's! :haha:

little surprised. Grant usually makes nice stuff.. probably an install faus pas....

I noticed that the price on Grant wheels has come down by a good bit lately. Could it be that they're making them in a foreign country now or something? How old is your wheel that got stripped out?

but it's not the wheel itself, it's that aluminum piece that goes on the shaft. That thing is kinda soft and needs to be held down really well.

So basically you're saying it was all caused by a loose nut in front of the wheel. :haha:

I think you mean the loose nut in back of the wheel. LOTS of problems with our trucks are caused by that selfsame nut
