steering wheel play

Loose as in WHERE? The tilt loose, the wheel loose, the steering loose? Need a little bit more of a description.

It's loose up and down ( not a big deal) but as you drive it feels losse/ worn. It feels like you could over correct very easy. I don't know how to explain it any better, sorry.

get under there and shake everything to see if anythings loose. i had a problem like that where i would sway on the highway, over time i replaced the box, pump, rag joint, stabilizers, hoses, fluids and it has only about 30 mins. (in time degrees whatever) at the top. when i replaced the rag joint supprisingly changed it alot.

Lay under the front of the truck and have someone slowly rock the steering wheel 1/2 turn left to 1/2 turn right. Look for where the play is. Most common spots are in the drag link ends and where the pitman arm is bolted to the sector shaft.

Also don't forget to check the rag joint.

After new tie rod ends, drag link ends, rag joint and steering box, my steering was still loose. I ended up having to tighten up the steering box. It was a reman unit from O'Reilly's. It's still not as tight as I would like it, but hell, it was only $125.

I wonder how noticeable the difference is between a (new) rag joint and U joint.

I went from a rag joint that was in reasonably good condition (not much slop) rag joint shaft to a dual u-joint shaft. I also did a steering brace and a slight box preload adjustment (you have to be really careful not to get it too tight, or it could lock up on you - in the middle of an off-ramp, perhaps, crash and burn). I went from over an inch of play to very little, mostly sidewall flex. Like a previous poster wrote, get a helper to turn the steering wheel back and forth, and get underneath and look for the slop.

I put a flaming river shaft and u-joint setup in mine and it made a difference. everything else was new from when I went crossover.
