Finally got to step one of progress to being ready for a big Mud Bog on Mother's Day Weekend.

The 396 shortblock has new rings, bearings, freshly turned crank, new oil pump and we put my Erson gear drive onto it.

Still a long ways to go, but it's a start.

any machine work to install your gear drive I have the same one Part#E992006

This one had been on my old 396 before. There was a slight clearance issue with this different 396 block, but just ground the cover a bit and no problem.

This one is a 3 gear one, with the single idler built into the cover.

Yep Mine to when I put it on my 468 in my yeller truk it slid right in my buddy has the same drive and it needed considerable grinding to get it to fit on his 402

This motor is replacing my old 396 in the "Truck Blazer". Shown there on it's last leg.

To make things more complex, here's the history of the Truck Blazer's motors:
2001- SB400 that I yanked out of a $250 2wd parts truck.

2002- 454 that I pulled out of a '77 Crew Cab.

2003-2005- 396 that I pulled out of the "Big Crew Cab"

2005- 454 that I pulled out of my Suburban that before that I pulled out of another Suburban.

The 454 from my Suburban got yanked out of the Truck Blazer last Fall and put into the Stepside of which I had yanked the Stepside's 396 out because of a spun bearing. And then I took the 396 with the spun bearing and this is that motor.

I took the old smoking 396 that came out of the Truck Blazer and Big Crew Cab before that, and sold that shortblock as a core for $400, and I spent $400 to have an engine builder freshen up this 396. I kept the gear drive from the 396 I sold and put it on this one.

Essentially, this motor will be the same as the last one.

Original 396 from Big Crew Cab:
Bored .030 over, steel crank, domed pistons, Comp 280 cam, 781 casting open chamber oval port heads, Holley aluminum dual plane intake and carb.

This 396 from the Stepside:
Bored .020 over, steel crank, domed pistons, Comp 280 cam, 781 casting open chamber oval port heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake and carb.

Sweet!
I have the same single idler gear drive on my 469. I really like it. nice and quiet and made it easy to degree the cam.

Yup...
Now you just need to do something like this:

oh hey Allan, has anyone officially invited you to blazerfest at hollister hills in june? I know gas will probably be $4 a gallon but i figured i'd extend an invitation since your a crazy road trip kinda guy. :D

The old 396 was run on nitrous in the Big Crew Cab before I owned it. The gear drive I have is probably the noisest one I've heard actually.

I wanted to go to Blazerfest before, and almost had a trip planned, but my friends backed out. And that was when fuel was "cheap" (at least compared to now).
