Still another leak

Yup, did that. Its moderately wet under the inspection cover. Rear main is dry, and the gally plugs look dry too. The oil is coming down to the starter from above. I had oil on the rear bottom of the valve cover gasket, but then I changed the valve covers, re-using the reusable, rubber (steel-reinforced) gaskets I have. I think the air flowing over the engine may be making it harder to find....that and new oil.

I'll swap in the cork valve cover gaskets I have before spending more $$$. I still need to buy a snatch block and 140 amp alternator for my new winch. Not easy to convince my wife while I'm tracking down this pain in the @^%$ leak!!! :mad:
 
Sunday I swapped in new valve cover gaskets and went for a 40+ drive, most on an interstate at 65 mph. When I got back, the oil had leaked down onto the starter covered the entire driveshaft and was making the t-case dripping wet. I'm convinced its not valve covers!

That afternoon I bought some FELPRO head gaskets, intake gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets and went to town tearing down the engine. Nothing stuck out as being a possible leak. Although the intake gasket was questionable and I could see it wet behind the head, but no further up.

Today I got things back together, sprayed everything down with carb cleaner and went for a short drive to burp the rad. When I got back I had a couple of small oil spots. Not sure if they are residual or not. I'll drive it for a couple of days and watch what happens.

This leak has me $%@#$#@!!!! :mad: :mad: :mad: If it is still leaking, the engine is coming out, and I have to check the cam oil galleys, and change the rear main seal. Not much else left. The machine shop installed the oil galley plugs (and sealed them). So we'll see.

I'll update in a day or two, unless I am too mad to type!
 
I've had problems sealing the valve covers. New cast covers, Napa rubber gaskets glued to the covers using Right stuff fixed it right up!
 
Glad you got this fixed, how long ago did you switch to The Right Stuff gasket maker?

Over a year ago, when I posted this originally. I have to say that the Right Stuff seals better than any RTV I have used.

After last weeks shake down run in the mountains, I decided to fell the rear lower corners on the valve covers......yup, they are moist with nice clean engine oil.

I'm using solid rubber gaskets (from Napa) that are Right-stuffed to the cast valve covers, and still have small seepage from the covers. Oh-well, I replaced 10 sets of valve cover gaskets and two sets of valve covers in the past 18 or so months. I guess I'll live with what I got.
 
That's probably the best feature of the later style heads, redesigned valve cover setup. The early design was a pain. The only goop I ever got to seal the VC for good was black weatherstrip adhesive.

Yeah, mine leak also and its annoying, i said oh well cause its a used motor, i could only imagine a new motor leaking like that. gl.
