what is everybodys experience/thoughts on the stock front shaft in these trucks? Do they seem to hold up ok with angles that arent too crazy.

Suburban is on 40s now, and just getting the stuff to do 35 spline outers on the 60. looks like the next weak link would be that front shaft.

They are reasonably strong, still running one in the front of my rig with a 1350 slip. Ran one in the rear for years with no problems, upgraded simply as preventative measure.

I've been abusing the in my truck for 3 years now with 38's and no failure. Granted I always thought the 1310/1330 combo ujoint would be the weak link and with the slip yoke extremely wore I'm looking to upgrade the front driveline when the time comes.

I ran one with the yoke ground out for lots of flex for a year of hard wheeling with 36-37s. Never broke it but it was so worn out when I pulled it out that the ball in the cv joint would pop out of the socket and the whole joint just flopped around. But there were extenuating circumstances, it saw lots of flexing and hard angles.

I'm currently using one for the rear of my scout now. Twisted the stock tube in half on the first real hard wheeling trip but I'm pretty sure I pinged it on a rock some time earlier. I'm now using the stock joints and slip with a piece of .200 wall tube.

Never had trouble from the one in my dd that has a mild lift, mild flex, and sees mild wheeling.

So maybe not a huge deal to upgrade to a 1350cv right away, I guess I have never broken a driveshaft joint anyway.

I guess what had me wondering, was that I started out last spring with new spicer joints, and every time I greased them the grease would come out black. This was being greased once a week, being used in low range and aired down (snow) anywhere between 100-250 miles a week.

My '90 has always had that size stock front driveshaft in it with no issues. It only has a 4" lift so reasonable angles but has been run hard on trails with 38's and 40's with a front locker for years with no breakage on the front shaft. I have broken 2 30-spline stub shafts and a stock necked down inner shaft on my D60 just for comparison.
