Been looking at some new high output alts for the WarWagon.

From what I can tell, a stock alt puts out 65amps.

Does anyone know what a stock alt puts out at idle? (800rpm for diesel I think it is). I know it cant be much, but for comparison sake, was curious.

Cheers & Happy New Year! :woot:

It will depend on the state of the battery charge,if its low then the altenator will put more amps out to compensate, than it will if it were fully charged..

I have put GM altenators to use on tractors and my first attempt at hooking one up resulted in it being "full feilded",which means its going to put out maximum amperage regardless of the battery's state of charge...one one I used that was only a 37 amp,it was putting out a good 20 amps at idle,I've read most altenators put out about 1/3 of their rated maximum output at idle speeds when a heavy load is on it..

the alt out of my ex's 89 tbi burb puts out 105. I just recently had it tested. idk what it is at idle.
It's going in my 86...

I do know efi vehicles need more at idle due to the 'puter & electronic requirements.

My 91 is a 100amp but haven't checked yet what it puts out at idle.

what you get with alt spec is yes full output.

if you want a dyno sheet print out then most places dont give that info on a basic bench test. as 98% of the people drivin dont care as long as it works and thay are running highway speeds so its chargin good anyways.

i know my custom alt for my plow truck is 200 amp unit. 125 at 800 rpm and ramps up to 210-213ish amps max above 3k rpm. reason for my needing this is full light bar drawin 60-70 amps all lights going / defrost on high / plow lights / wipers. stock 100 amp wasnt cuttin it even with brand new 1000cca battery after 30min drivin/plowin. and i have live hydro pump for plow. NOT electric.

she charges super now. i can leave everything on at idle and 1hr later still runnin if there is still gas in the tank. :haha:

so if you want to know the alt specs at specific rpm you will need to find a shop that can do specific testing speeds. not a basic bench test for yes or no output.

I was thinking about doing it myself. Didn't know I could get it done anywhere.
Is your 200amp a CS144?

The 65a rating is what is shown at Advance Auto and Auto Zone for a replacement unit, thats where Im getting that number from BTW.

I am looking at a 200a unit on ebay, great feedback on seller, $175 shipped.

When at idle, just after start.. when the glow plugs are still cycling, my lights dim (interior and headlights), so Im pretty sure the alt I have is weak.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Just make sure that you change the output wire size to at least a 4ga battery cable otherwise you're in for an electrical fire.

There's a great alt upgrade thread here somewhere. I thought I had subscribed it, but I didn't.

The guy used a battery cable from the alt, to the junction block, to the starter, all the way after upgrading to a 200 amp unit.

Remember that his early diesel doesn't use a CS1xx alternator.

I have read some hi amp 10SI altenators actually put out LESS amps at idle speeds than a stock one will, and they say "the altenator lamp may flicker at low speeds, that is normal"--so beware of that if your looking to upgrade,or you may end up worse off than you were to begin with!.
