Its never worked since the day I bought the K5. I want to start tracing the non-working issue down. Where does it normally hook up to on the other end of the wire and what color is it normally? Its an 88 BTW. I'm prolly gonna have to do some chasing as the PO did some wire hacking :angry1:

It's actually called a Volt Meter in your 88, older vehicles used an Amp guage. (Please take no offense, just some people don't know). I'm not sure on your 88 where it connects to, I'm sure right to the circuit board if it's stock, but if the guage is screwed, you can just get an after maerket one,(I prefer Auto-Meter Ultra-lites for price and quality), hook the black to ground and the positiuve to any "keyed" 12 volt source. I hope this helps, if not maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in.

Look at the gauge. If it has volts on it, say 9 to 15, somewhere like that, then it can be hooked up pretty much anywhere as long as it is from +battery voltage to ground.

Like dbabicky said, there probably is a place on the panel it is supposed to hook up to.

BUT, if it just shows amps, then its a lot trickier.
If you hook that one across the battery voltage, something is going to blow, since its a dead short.

Not sure where that one hooks up. It should be between the main power lead and the battery.

dbabicky, yes I know what they are called and from what years and I don't take offense. Was just being generalized here. The stock gauge is hooked up to the circuit board in the back and does work as I've tested it in another rig. Hence why I'm searching for the wire to trace it for breaks or loose connections.

I've got a complete factory wiring diagram for my 82 K30, if you want I can look in there for you but I don't know if they are the same beings yours is an 88.

Just looked, there's a pink wire that runs from the wiring block on the guage pnl to the fuse box that powers all the guages. I'd say if the rest of your guages are working, it's the guage itself.

Was dealing with my daughters 14th birthday yesturday. Won't have time to get to it again until this coming weekend.
