My 85 jimmy has a th350/208 with fixed yoke that appears to be stock. But my 90 and 84 both have slip yokes and havent come across anyone else with this. Has anyone heard of stock fixed yokes on 208 from GM? or do you think it has been converted? Also the shifter does not mount to the floor.

You can use dodge parts to make a very stock appearing fixed output, probably your situation. Never heard of it from GM.

x2 on the dodge parts or whole dodge case swaped in. with the input gear swaped to chevy.

what do you mean shifter not on floor ?

sure its a 208 aluminum case . not a cast iron case of a 203 or 205 ?

Dodge had 208s with fixed yokes. The input mounting pattern and the input shaft are different than Chevy. It might be possible to use a Dodge 208 with a special adapter and swapping the input gear to the Chevy one. But I haven't heard of anyone doing it.

There are 2 ways to swap the Dodge fixed-yoke onto a Chevy case. For either one, you use the Dodge mainshaft and tail-housing. The way mine works is that the Back half of the Dodge case is slightly modified to fit on the Chevy 208. The other way is to redrill the Chevy case to accept the Dodge tail-housing. There are pictures here if you search.

Here is a comparison of the Chevy and Dodge 208s:

Notice that the Dodge case has the fill plug in the center, while the Chevy has it near the top. You can also see the large threaded hole on the right side of the Chevy case that the Dodge doesn't have. This is for the bellhousing-tcase support rod, which Dodge didn't use. This might help you figure out which you have.

Now here is my converted 208 - the back half of the case is Dodge - modified with that threaded hole, the relocated fill plug (now I have 3 plugs) and a shift rail holder on the inside.

There are 2 other ways to make a fixed-yoke 208. Tom woods can machine your Chevy parts like this:

Or you can drill the end of the output shaft and bolt on a yoke (http://www.driveshaftsuperstore.com/drive_shaft_SYE.htm). This is just as long as the stock Chevy case.

Does the case say 208 on it? There is a SYE kit available for the NP241 which is a very similar transfer case.

What year Dodge 208 would I need?

Thank you,
Ed

Great info on NP208's. The usual 4X4 parts suppliers turn their noises up at the 208. So I need a 4x4 700r4 with a 208, very common. Don't shoot me but I am interested in this because I want to keep the 208 in my Dodge and put in a 700R4. And no I am not bolting up the 318 to the 700R4. But anyway now I see this project is doable without tons of cash for atlas transfer cases or adapters. Now I have to figure the clocking difference out. much thanks.

Dodge has the speedometer cable on the opposite side from Chevy. It uses a different gear, but the same cable interface. My stock cable reached this with some rerouting, so it wasn't an issue.

For the model year of the case, it is pretty similar to the years you find 208s in the Chevy. They were offered 1980-1987. I don't know what changed (if anything) over those years. Basically if it is an NP208 and it has a fixed yoke, that's what you want.

I am wondering if i can make a dodge 208 to 700R4 mating by using the chevy 208 input shaft and make a clock / adapter ring. You guys see any issues with this?

BTW I am not totally chevy-less I have a 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 Suburban, the Dodge is more an rv toy project and I have had it forever.

I have always wanted to see somebody try this. It is simple to swap a Chevy input gear into the Dodge case. The only drawback I know if that you don't have the support brace that runs up to the bellhousing. Some people report problems with that and some say it's fine.
