and its a good question. i'd like to know the answer to it myself. b/c, iirc, the retro roller cam *lifters are an inch or so taller b/c of the crossbars inhibiting rotation & dont need the spider at all

You are correct. Retro fit roller cams use a "pair" of cross tied lifters so the lifter bores do not need to be machines nor does it require a spider tray since the factory style cross bars aren't used.
