Stout 85K5

Just another cool K5
Thanks man!

Good to know!

Hehe, not yet. Still in hunter / gather mode for the SuperSportside pieces, but I did hang some exhaust manifolds on the 5.7 for the K5 today though :haha:

Ah, ya.. Well, that isn't going to happen. I have a confession to make... I sold that Corvair van about a month ago. That thing had been in the family since 1982. I also have my 68 GMC for sale. Its getting the point in life where I have to pick and choose projects and neither the van or my old GMC are anywhere near the top of the list I want to spend time and money on. I've had some weird things going on with my body this past year where I don't know how many more projects I have left in me so distractions like the van and GMC just need to go so I can stay focused on what I want to work on. I have a new RAM Power Wagon that I want to do a few things to as well.

Hated to see it go but glad it did. Funny story as a few weeks after this guy bought it I was at my daughter's school for a Halloween party and I ran right into the guy. Come to find out his kid is in my daughters 1st grade class. It is even more funny because both of us are much older than any of the other parents of 1st graders and could practically be their grandparents :haha:

Well I am in a similar situation.
I have too many projects and I am thinning the herd and on the chopping block is my 64 corvair greenbriar van 8 door.
I had plans for it and my 65 corvair coupe but I already sold the coupe.
I had a plan to put a 3.8 v6 in it.
It's funny about the age, my daughter is 40 years younger than me and now my boys are 50 years younger than me :doah:

$12,000 'merican pesos. I already have a buyer lined up but he has a 1954 Chevy medium duty farm truck to sell first.

:haha: This one

Yeah once he mentioned the 1968 I saw the link and clicked it.
:waytogo:

Just found this. Your K10 has always been one of my favorites, figured I'd hang around and watch what you do here.

How's the 454 coming?

Thanks dude! Well, the 454 SuperSportside is coming along……..slow as usual but its coming. Hope to be doing burnouts by Valentines Day. Not much has happened with anything for the K5 other than I installed one axle U-joint :dunno:

Kinda derailing my own K5 thread but here is the progression of the SuperSportside…

TBI teardown commencing

After power washing 7 years of road grime off
49376155918_c2c0005a9f_z.jpg

New bits that had to be installed to run the MPFI. A 4x reluctor wheel and a fresh timing cover with a crank sensor provision
49376808722_926b8da9dc_z.jpg

And a brand new L29 Throttle Body.

L29 intake all cleaned up and ready to fly

Intake on with fresh injectors and new injector harness
49376817587_d8b05cdebb_z.jpg

Pulled the old timing cover off to install the 4x reluctor and found the nylon timing chain as loose as a $2 whore. This discovery cost almost over 3 weeks given it was right as we were going to the Christmas holiday. I ordered a really nice new Howard's L29 timing chain which was not correct as my 454 does not have a roller cam. Ordered a Gen V double roller and found that a double roller wouldn’t clear the reluctor wheel. Ordered a Gen V single row chain and it worked but that caused a lot of delay and hair pulling
49376162478_7790a29bd6_z.jpg

Finally got the front together after a new L29 balancer appeared in the mail. The L29 balancer has a shorter snout to clear the reluctor as well.

Converted the left-hand fender from a 1993 spec to a 96-00 in order to mount the black box ECM in its OEM location (where the 93 windshield washer reservoir used to live) and add the L29 EVAP can in its correct spot. This turned out to be quite the project as the washer bottle had to be upgraded and relocated to the 90-00 spot as well as the horn to the front side of the radiator support. The horn and washer pump needed some rewiring to reach their new homes to boot

Then the Howell harness arrived so then it was time to start pruning the 1993 chassis harness of all of its prior TBI lifelines and figure out how to merge them. In true Howell fashion, several leads were too short, in the wrong location or had the wrong gender or generation of connector, which I am still sorting out as we speak but the engine harness is in the truck now. So frustrating

This is the 1993 chassis harness after pruning. I tell ya, this truck required a lot more careful pruning and wiring over the K10 and Suburban by 1000% as there is so much more integration between the chassis harness and engine harness on GMT400 trucks. Plus the fact, I want ABS and everything else to work as it was before. @ZooMad75 came and hung out last Saturday and Sunday double checking my chassis wiring plan as this harness will be a mofo to pull back out to address errors if any are made now. We came up with solid plans for a few circuits I wasn’t sure which way to go. VSS and TCC for example. Howell has their own lead to feed the black box but the 1993 ABS wants gets it signal from the DRAC. The other thing that is new to me is dealing with an auto trans and sorting out the torque converter clutch. Given the fact this truck was originally a 5 speed manual made it easier….or more difficult....Haven’t decided yet

Thank gawd for Zoomad having access to these OEM wiring diagrams from the dealership. This makes things much easier
49469202207_176bb7ca6b_z.jpg

This is how she sits at the moment. Howell engine harness is in and I'm process of wrapping up the 1993 chassis harness then throw it in the engine bay and merge a few circuits together

oh, and the buyer for the yellow 68 GMC petered out. He ran into family health issues so the truck goes back in the market again :mad1:

Anybody with an L29 Cruise module and cable might want to get in touch with Larry. He needs one. The cable on the existing one that used to go to the TBI is a tad bit on the short side. Without it his foot is going to get a little tuckered out on the long hauls.

Can't wait to see the difference in driveability with the multiport setup over the TBI. Burnouts anybody?:burnout:

Scored some nice chairs for the K5 today. A couple ladies were selling these from their tiny home on wheels project they’re building. Ironically, these came out of an ex-Forestry Service (GSA) International Crew Cab hotshot firetruck. That is ironic as I work for International and I have the GSA account. They actually had 8 of these in the beginning. Their ad said they were out of a Freightshaker but when they showed me a picture of the truck it was a green International DuraStar. I said, that's no Freightliner and one gal said to the other gal, "No, honey....its an International. Did you put Freightliner in the ad"? :haha:

The seats are not perfect but for a 100 bux for the pair was a steal knowing how well built these seats are. Going to plant these on the K5 pedestals then find some black GMT900 3rd row seats for the back

Nice score on the seats. I didn't know you worked for International. I was a factory certified tech for them for 10 yrs.

Small world! With Rush or back in the Salt Lake Valley days? Depending when you left many things have changed in the Navistar dealer world with a lot of pressure now being placed on the Service Departments and Technicians. I just turned 20 years in November as they recognize my 6 Workhorse years prior to Navistar buying them. I started at GM then moved to Workhorse when it became an independent manufacturer and spun away from GM in 1999. In 2005, Navistar bought Workhorse then in 2008 I started supporting Workhorse and International branded vehicles and now have IC school buses as well. I actually have an odd mix of responsibilities with being assigned the UPS and GSA (Government vehicles) accounts then have a handful of IC Bus dealers. My life is spent traveling all over the country and working from home.

Originally I went through their ITEP(International Technical Education Program) when I graduated UTI and got on with Lake City International in SLC that then became Lake City Trucks and then got bought out by Rush Truck Center. I have done Workhorse and IC buses as well as many others. Do you happen to know Bill Cosby(not the actor) with Navistar? I cant remember his official title. GSA was always a pleasure to deal with any repairs on their stuff.

What kind of engines are in UPS trucks?
Is it true they scrap their own trucks so you can't buy them second hand.
I heard that rumour once and didn't think much of it until I realized you never see old UPS trucks on the used market.

Haha, small world indeed. I was going to ask if you knew Bill as well. Figured you did if you were part of Lake City International. Bill is a good friend of mine and we're on the same regional team and carry the same CSE titles although I am dual role CSE (IC Bus)/FSM (National Fleet Accounts). He just built a sweet J-10 that was a SEMA this past fall. The funny thing is I live in CO and he handles CO. He lives in CA but I had CA for IC Bus up until recently when I swapped CA for Nefuknbraska :dunno:

That is correct, UPS scraps all of their trucks with small exception of class 8 tractors that are on a lease program. Their expected life span of a package car is 20 to 30 years. The older International package cars had 6.9L, 7.3L and 6.0L Navistar diesels and before that they had 345 International gassers and GM 292 6 cylinders. Depending on the car size, the Workhorse package cars had 4.8L, 6.0L, 8.1L, MF7 (6.4L Navistar diesel = PowerJoke) and one single Duramax that is a one-off FWD double decker package car that roams around downtown Indy. Sadly, Navistar killed the Workhorse brand in 2012 so all of their new package cars are Freightliners with the same GM L96 6.0L/Allison 2200 that we used. UPS also bought a handful of Fords with the 5.4L but that is not going well so I doubt there will be more. Pretty much everything UPS buys is spark ignited to be able to run on gasoline and easily convertible to propane. Canada is 100% propane. They buy only a handful of diesels per year, if any at all. Smart people

Yep me and Bill used to work together when he was still a mechanic and then he was my boss for a while and then he was our rep for International. Haven't seen him in person since I went to Texas in 2012 for Rush's tech competition and Bill took all of us from SLC out to dinner. I'm friends with him on FB and see all the cool stuff with his Jeep.

Bill is good people. I'll be seeing him shortly in Chicago then again at the annual Parts and Service Expo coming up in Dallas. I'll tell him I ran into you here :waytogo:
