what are the cons of getting a straight pipe rather than a traditinal dule and can it pass marta? my main thing is that it will pass because it is mainly a street truck, and also if i do get a straight pipe will it mess anything up. i have talked to some of my friends but they have no idea, we are all just in highschool so we dont know much about anything just what we tinker with so i decide to come to yall. thanks jbowers

What? :doah:

What is marta?

I'm guessing you are comparing straight pipe vs. running a muffler and catalytic converter? If so, no, you won't pass smog w/o a cat.

If you are considering single exhaust exit style vs dual exit, yes, you can pass with both. You can get plenty of flow out of a 3" single for a stock v8, so dual pipes would be a matter of preference.

Clarify what you are talking about, what vehicle, what motor, what you current setup is, etc. and we can be more helpful. :D

yea sorry about that man. is there a was i can get get it LOUD and be able to pass smog

leave the cat in place and put a glasspack or cherrybomb in place of your stock muffler. they make plenty of noice with the cat in place and no muffler

Its also a good way to get pulled over every weekend:rolleyes:

Truthfully, i ran my burb straight piped with just a cat (no muffler), and it sounded like crap. The cheapest way to make it louder will be to put a cheap muffler or glass pack in place of the stock muffler.

The thrush mufflers off of summit are about as cheap as you can go. I have one sitting in my side yard, 3", that you could have for the cost of shipping. I ran it when i was in college cause i couldn't' afford the $600 exhaust system i now have.

Not positive on the exact model number, but something like this.

thanks man i appritiate it a lot but i think im just going to take it to the local shop and just get it done, the guy who owned it before me let it get all rusted us and one of the pipes already came off of the the muffler and the other is about to go, plus my mom has been on me about it right after i got it so i guess ill just get it done. but thanks anyways. and my membership is coming soon:D

Sounds good. If you are going to a shop, get them to redo it from teh cat back, unless your cat is obviously bad.

If you want a single, go with a 3" all teh way back. If dual, 2.25 or 2.5 will do it, do one muffler with dual exits. That will save you the cost of a 2nd muffler. I've always loved the 50 series flowmasters for a good sounding muffler, but to each is own.

thanks dhcomp will look into it. hopefuly will have it all done this weekend. thanks again jbowers

I drove my junk with open headers and it was LOUD so I went and had an exhaust built for it within a day. I drove my cammed LT1 trans am with a high flow cat and a cutout for years and it was much quieter. The cat helps a lot.

i got straight pipes and 4 inch tips on my 1999 tahoe, but i still got the cats tho and its pretty loud and sounds good imo.

Easy. run open headers. when it comes time to smog... just put you exhaust back on. I would suggest my setup (3" duals with flowmaster single stage), but I don't have a cat, and mine is smog exempt. But other than that, mine sounds fantastic. Not too loud, but loud enough to hear it.

Im not trying to rain on anyone parade here, but Im so sick of people thinking that just because its loud that it sounds good. Something I noticed when I had my nova was that with mufflers you can have alot more fun on the street without alerting every cop within miles of your presence. Why not flowmasters or some sort of performance muffler? Most sound nice, but make enough noise when you mash on the skinny pedal.

Im not master of the universe yet, and if you want super loud exhaust with an internally stock small block, go ahead. Myself, I like to hear the radio and hate being pulled over for stupid **** like exhaust. BTDT, not happening anymore for me.

and before you guys start ripping on me for being an old fart... Im 24.

I am starting to lean the same way as you... and i'm still in high school. nice doesn't always mean loud.

I have turbo mufflers that sound good, but the frequency makes it really loud at highway speeds. Sad thing is that the glasspacks on my other burb are quieter than the turbo's. Inside a building you cant really hear the GP's until it gets close or I'm on the skinny. The turbo's can be heard from blocks away whether I'm gunning it or not. Its all about frequency.

And loud sucks if you drive for more than 30 minutes at a time. The drone drowns out everything else.

I agree,

I had a 2000 gmc sierra 3/4 ton with a 6.0. It was true dual with glasspacks and chrome tips. It sounded good but was too loud on the freeway, got very annoying long distances. I finally got tired of it and had the glasspacks swapped out for flowmaster and had smaller chrome tips put on. Sounded much better, loud when you got on it but nice when on the freeway.

I haven't heard anything with less than 500 hp and straight pipes that sounded good
